1992 — Dr. Sbaito It was created for MS-DOS PCs, it was a speech synthesis system. It acted as a psychologist and replied to sound cards. However it cannot be considered as a very efficient conversational bot as it asks the usual questions like “how do you feel ?” and to the subjects, it cannot fathom, it says “that’s not my problem”. In simplest terms, Dr. Sbaito was an attempt to create a digital psychologist that would talk to humans and advice like a human.

2006 — IBM Watson The perfect example of building a system that assists humans is IBM Watson. This system was made to be able to answer questions using natural language processing and was appeared on the Quiz Show Jeopardy. Later in 2013, it was announced to be utilized in making decisions in Lung Cancer Treatment. It got bigger and bigger and it uses many advanced AI tools and supports different cloud platforms.

2010 — SIRI Developed by Apple, found in IOS devices, SIRI is another question-answer (audio based) chatterbot that answers User questions as well as performs tasks. Inputs are considered as intents and the bot looks for triggers in the inputs like “set alarm” or “call mom”, these triggers invokes an activity. SIRI did all groundwork for all other bots and personal assistants that came later.

2012 — Google Now Developed by Google, Google NOW is found in Mobile devices to search for Apps, provides Recommendations, and performs actions on certain requests. Google Now is actively known as a feature for Search Engines that allows users to predict the information, they may need in the form of the information cards.

2015 — ALEXA ALEXA is a virtual assistant AI that is used in Amazon’s Echo device. It performs Natural Language Processing on voice and uses different algorithms to receive and respond to different requests. For any task, a wake-word is used that is “Alexa” and the device is ready to do activities.

2015 — Cortana After Apple and Google, Microsoft developed a virtual assistant for its devices. Often seen in Windows 10 and Windows 10 Mobile, Cortana works like Alexa and performs natural language processing on voice.

2016 — Bots for Messenger Facebook Launched Messenger that has bots that can interact with users. Different business Facebook pages use these bots to do the work for them. Answer pre-defined questions like prices of some items, making an appointment, get to know a store, etc. to the customers. These bots are growing, and many monetized pages make use of bots that reduces the work dependency on a human.

2016 — Tay Tay was built by Microsoft to mimic the speech and habits of a teenager; however, it created a controversy when it was found posting offensive tweets and became increasingly paranoid. It was shut down after 16 hours of Launch.
