Eurowings Discover launches with first flight to Zanzibar via Mombasa

Date:

The Lufthansa Group’s newest subsidiary, Eurowings Discover, took off on its inaugural flight yesterday. Operating as flight 4Y134, the Airbus A330-200 registered D-AXGE connected Frankfurt (FRA) with Zanzibar (ZNZ) via Mombasa (MBA). The Airbus A330-200 has a total of 270 seats, comprising 22 lie-flat Business Class seats and 248 Economy Class seats. The airline says all of its aircraft are to feature a maximum 31 Premium Economy Class seats.

Eurowings Discover is the latest subsidiary of the German airline group. It’s ambition is to offer leisure flights. “The mission of Eurowings Discover is to tailor the travel experience to the guests’ individual needs and to make the flight a special experience,” explains the Lufthansa Group.

“We have built an airline in just one year – an ambitious goal that we have achieved with the great support from the entire Lufthansa Group, a motivated team and in close cooperation with the German Federal Aviation Authority. We wish to express our sincere gratitude to everyone,” explained Wolfgang Raebiger, CEO of Eurowings Discover and pilot onboard the first flight.

The carrier will expand its network with 15 new destinations in 2021. This includes the following routes:

  • Frankfurt to Punta Cana from August 9
  • Frankfurt to Windhoek from August 10
  • Frankfurt to Las Vegas from September 30
  • Frankfurt to Mauritius from October 1
  • Frankfurt to Bridgetown from November 1
  • Frankfurt to Cancún from November 1
  • Frankfurt to Varadero from November 2
  • Frankfurt to Montego Bay from November 3

From November 2021, medium-haul routes will also be incorporated into the Eurowings Discover network, operated by Airbus A320 aircraft. This includes the following routes:

  • Frankfurt to Fuerteventura
  • Frankfurt to Gran Canaria
  • Frankfurt to Lanzarote
  • Frankfurt to Tenerife
  • Frankfurt to Hurghada
  • Frankfurt to Marsa Alam
  • Frankfurt to Marrakech

Further expansion is also anticipated from summer 2022 with inaugural services from Munich. The German city will see short, medium and long-haul services.

A key difference between Eurowings and Eurowings Discover is its connection with other Lufthansa Group airlines. “Thanks to full integration into the Lufthansa feeder network, travelers will benefit from end-to-end booking processes and seamless transfer traffic,” the airline group said in a statement.

This year, it hopes to have a total of 11 aircraft in its fleet, growing to 21 in mid-2022. This comprises 10 Airbus A320s and 11 Airbus A330s.
