etco Homes Launches BeeHome Urban Beekeeping Partnership, Housing…

The Addison – Exterior

As our buyers seek to have unique amenities in the heart of the Melrose District, our BeeHome initiative in partnership with Alvéole and Amanda Haas will introduce an unparalleled amenity offering for eco-conscious luxury living in Los Angeles.

etco Homes, a privately-owned, Los Angeles-based homebuilding company, today announced its new sustainable beekeeping program, BeeHome. Launched in partnership with urban beekeeping company Alvéole, and urban gardener Amanda Haas, BeeHome will house thousands of bees on the rooftop terraces of designer model homes at The Addison and The Ainsley, two of a trio of communities in etco Homes’ The Melrose Collection. To celebrate the installation of the new hives, etco Homes will host a rooftop BeeHome interactive workshop at The Addison on July 22, open to the public.

“As our buyers seek to have unique amenities in the heart of the Melrose District, our BeeHome initiative in partnership with Alvéole and Amanda Haas will introduce an unparalleled amenity offering for eco-conscious luxury living in Los Angeles,” said Bree Long, Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing at etco Homes. “Our buyers are inherently socially and environmentally conscious and our team at etco Homes feels passionate about promoting biodiversity within our communities and contributing to a more sustainable approach to urban living in Los Angeles, while educating and connecting our residents with the environment.”

The benefits of BeeHome’s urban beekeeping program include an opportunity to educate city dwellers to the crucial role of bees in food production and the sustainable preservation of large populations of bees, butterflies, bumblebees, and other pollinators that are in rapid decline all over the world. Bees pollinate more than 130 varieties of fruits and vegetables around the globe, representing a third of our food supply.

On Thursday, July 22 at 2:00PM, etco Homes’ BeeHome will be hosting a “Hive to Honey” workshop with Mia Frances LaRocca, Urban Beekeeper from Alvéole, where guests can participate in an artisanal honey extraction. A beekeeper will assist guests over the course of the fun-filled hour as guests learn to uncap honeycomb cells, hand-spin honeycombs in the centrifugal extractor, and filter the raw honey bottling into their own honey jar and labeling it. Additionally, at 3:00PM etco Homes’ urban gardener Amanda Haas will be leading a “DIY Urban Garden” workshop on how to build your own rooftop garden with edibles and eco-friendly plants. Guests can learn what plants grow best according to different areas of Los Angeles and how to successfully grow edibles that they can use for pizza toppings to salads and more. To register for either or both events, guests can reserve a spot here.

“This summer, the bees from The Addison and The Ainsley rooftop apiaries will begin to pollinate the urban flora that surrounds Melrose Avenue by gathering nectar and pollen from flowers within a three-mile radius of the hives and bringing it back to ensure the colony’s development,” said Mia Frances LaRocca, Urban Beekeeper at Alvéole. “At the end of the season, our beekeepers will harvest the bees honey and share it with the residents of The Addison and The Ainsley and local community members.”

“I’m delighted to have the opportunity to partner with etco Homes on the launch of BeeHome at The Addison and The Ainsley,” said Amanda Haas. “As pollinators, bees play a part in every aspect of the ecosystem and are crucial to keeping our environment healthy. etco Homes’ commitment to creating more sustainable urban communities is inspiring and I look forward to collaborating on creating a pollinator-friendly gardens at The Melrose Collection.”

Nickelodeon Resort Pools are Impermeable to Water (and Slime) Thanks…

Published

on

How to permanently waterproof a pool: The concrete in all the pools of the Nickelodeon Resort in Riviera Maya in México were treated with PENETRON ADMIX.

Because Penetron crystalline technology becomes an integral part of the concrete matrix and provides protection against chloride ion ingress and moisture penetration, it will also significantly reduces future maintenance costs for the Nickelodeon Resort.

The Riviera Maya Nickelodeon Resort in Quintana Roo, México welcomed its first summer vacation guests in June 2021. The Penetron System was used throughout the seaside project to ensure durable and waterproof concrete structures – both above- and below-grade.

Located just 17 miles (27 km) south of Cancun International Airport, México’s first Nickelodeon Resort is a family beach vacation destination with a playful Nickelodeon twist. The resort’s 280 suites all offer panoramic views of the Caribbean Ocean and have direct access to the pool area. In addition, the resort has six restaurants, three bars, a spa, an oceanfront pool, and the 6-acre Aqua Nick™ water park with over 20 water slides (total length: >600 m / >2,000 feet) and 555 meters (1,830 feet) of rivers.

“Naturally, a Nickelodeon resort will play off the network’s most popular characters – and the Riviera Maya Resort does exactly that,” says Alejandro Muciño, Managing Director of Penetron México. “For example, the Pineapple Suite is inspired by SpongeBob’s pineapple-shaped home under the sea; the rooftop Lair Suite is designed as an underground lair dedicated to the Ninja Turtles; and the Big Kahuna Suite is an homage to the history of Nickelodeon animation.”

A Coastal Challenge

Penetron México worked together with Benau Comercial, the Penetron distributor for the Caribbean region of México, and the general contractor to develop a complete range of waterproofing solutions, as both the below-grade and above-grade structures of the Nickelodeon complex needed protection from the coastal environment, high groundwater levels, and exposure to the tropical climate of the Yucatan Peninsula.

Local ready-mix suppliers provided PENETRON ADMIX-treated concrete for the pools (the wading pool, children’s pool, and main pool), hot tubs, the tanks of the wastewater treatment plant, and the hotel’s planter boxes. Penetron’s topical products – PENECRETE MORTAR and PENETRON – were applied to waterproof and repair the concrete roof slabs, the water slides, the pool drains of the main pool, the Lazy River and Rapid River concrete linings, the water compensation tanks, pumping tanks, machine room roof, and water park fountains.

Self-Healing Concrete

Easily mixed in during batching and unaffected by climatic conditions, PENETRON ADMIX quickly becomes an integral part of the concrete and lasts for the life of the concrete. Topically applied to concrete, PENETRON and PENECRETE MORTAR also provide the same self-healing capabilities as PENETRON ADMIX-treated concrete. Any hairline cracks that form in the concrete will permanently self-heal when exposed to water.

Alejandro Muciño adds, “Because Penetron crystalline technology becomes an integral part of the concrete matrix and provides protection against chloride ion ingress and moisture penetration, it will also significantly reduces future maintenance costs for the Nickelodeon Resort.”

The Penetron Group is a leading manufacturer of specialty construction products for concrete waterproofing, concrete repairs, and floor preparation systems. The Group operates through a global network, offering support to the design and construction community through its regional offices, representatives, and distribution channels.

Aperture Cellars Announces Acquisition of Farrow Ranch

Published

The first 100-point vineyard in Alexander Valley history, Farrow Ranch is considered a classic source of some of California’s finest fruit—simply put, the grapes grown here are some of the best in the world.

Aperture Cellars (http://www.aperture-cellars.com), the record setting Sonoma wine label founded by renowned winemaker Jesse Katz, is excited to announce its acquisition of Farrow Ranch in the hills of Alexander Valley. The deal was closed by Aperture Cellars on September 2nd, 2021. Farrow Ranch has since 2012 produced the fruit for Katz’s Devil Proof Malbec—with critic Jeb Dunnuck giving the Devil Proof 2018 Farrow Ranch Malbec a record setting 100-points and calling it “the finest Malbec I’ve ever tasted,” and Erin Brooks of Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate labeling the wine “the best example of 100% Malbec I’ve ever tasted,” offering a commensurate 100-point score.

One of the most distinguished vineyard sites in Northern California, Farrow Ranch is a widely-admired legacy property that has been under family ownership, Carol Farrow, for more than three decades. Totaling over seventy-five acres of premium Bordeaux varietals, the blue chip acquisition—long a sought-after source of nuanced, ultra-premium fruit for producers in the broader Sonoma region—brings Aperture’s total estate holdings to over 120 acres. Aperture will retain the services of Munselle Vineyard Management, who have been farming the hillside site for the last 7 years. Both renowned viticulture specialist Phil Freese and Jesse Katz will continue working together and focusing attention on the details of farming and cultivation at Farrow Ranch.

“I am thrilled to share the news of this exciting acquisition, which expands Aperture’s portfolio considerably and marks an important evolution in the history of our estate,” says Jesse Katz. “The first 100-point vineyard in Alexander Valley history, Farrow Ranch is considered a classic source of some of California’s finest fruit—simply put, the grapes grown here are some of the best in the world. I’ve been working with Farrow Ranch fruit since 2010 with my critically acclaimed Devil Proof Malbecs, and I’m excited to officially bring this unique site into Aperture’s estate holdings.”

Aperture plans to make a single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon from Farrow Ranch’s hillside blocks moving forward, expanding the estate’s site-specific series of wines with a new expression of Sonoma’s terroir. “I’ve had the great fortune to work with multiple 100 Point Sites throughout my career around the world, and Farrow Ranch is one of the greatest sites I’ve ever worked with. There is no doubt in my mind that this site has the ability of producing a 100-point Cabernet Sauvignon as well,” notes Jesse.

Where the Alexander Valley benchlands reach the Mayacamas coastal range, Farrow Ranch lays claim to complex volcanic soils and a warm, breezy, sun-drenched terroir enjoying an April-through-October growing season. Surrounding steep hillsides help to accentuate frequent diurnal temperature shifts of forty degrees, with the Pacific’s marine influence sending cool, restorative moisture in from the coast in the evenings.

About Aperture Cellars: Aperture Cellars (http://www.aperture-cellars.com) champions a range of stunning Bordeaux style wines from the Sonoma Valley. Founded in 2009 by winemaker Jesse Katz, Aperture wines are crafted from unique, cool-climate vineyards in Sonoma’s top regions. Aperture controls 210+ acres of vineyards, in addition to their 32 planted acres on the winery site, specifically sourced for their unique terroir and soil composition. Wanting to craft wines on par with the quality and refinement that are so integral to a Bordeaux, Jesse set roots in Sonoma, believing it offers the best of both worlds: new world fruit and old-world elegance.
