Elon Musk efficiency tweet pushes Dogecoin prices up again

Published

on

Last weekend the price of Dogecoin (a meme-inspired cryptocurrency that was developed “in about two hours” in 2013) fell sharply after Elon Musk said on Saturday Night Live that cryptocurrency is a “hustle.” Now, possibly confirming that statement, Musk has followed up his announcement that Tesla is “suspending” accepting payments in Bitcoin because of its inefficiency, by tweeting about “potentially promising” improvements in Dogecoin.

Naturally, his tweets have increased speculation that Dogecoin could have a future use and Coinbase reports its value shot up 18 percent, before falling again. The Tesla reveal indicated the company would look for more energy efficient options than the “insane” usage trend shown by Bitcoin, although Musk’s apparent surprise at this widely known fact made the whole thing feel like a stunt. Like Bitcoin, Dogecoin relies on less efficient “proof of work” blockchain technology, and more efficient cryptocurrencies are already available, but that hasn’t stopped speculators from chasing the dream of Tesla, SpaceX and Doge.

Tech giants call on the SEC to require climate impact reports from companies

Published

on

A group of tech giants — including Amazon, Facebook and Google parent Alphabet — have urged the Securities and Exchange Commission to push companies to issue climate change performance reports. Intel, eBay, Salesforce and Autodesk also signed the joint letter to SEC chair Gary Gensler.

Following an SEC request for public input on such disclosures, the companies called on the agency to make businesses report their greenhouse gas emissions, harnessing existing frameworks and “recognized global standards for required metrics, such as the World Resources Institute GHG Protocol.” They also called on the SEC to allow for climate-related disclosures outside of annual, quarterly and other filings.

“We believe that climate disclosures are critical to ensure that companies follow through on stated climate commitments and to track collective progress towards addressing global warming and building a prosperous, resilient zero-carbon economy,” the companies wrote in the letter, which CNBC spotted.

The seven companies noted they’ve purchased 21 gigawatts of clean energy altogether and that they’re each working toward operating on entirely renewable energy. Last month, Google revealed plans to run completely on carbon-free energy by 2030. Microsoft has pledged to become carbon negative by 2030. It’s also a member of Amazon’s Climate Pledge, alongside the likes of Uber, Rivian, Verizon (Engadget’s parent company), IBM and Visa.

GE, Safran developing cleaner energy aircraft engines that could work with hybrid technology, hydrogen

General Electric‘s aviation unit and its joint-venture partner Safran of France on Monday said they are developing new airplane engines that aim to cut emissions by more than a fifth of today’s levels.

GE Aviation and France’s Safran together produce some of the most commonly used aircraft engines under their CFM joint venture. Together they launched a new program, called CFM Rise, that will develop and test new technology that could enter service in the mid-2030s, the companies said.

The global aviation industry contributes about 2% of global carbon emissions and aircraft manufacturers and airlines have been scrambling to find ways to reduce that, while balancing with, what before the pandemic was, strong growth in travel demand.

GE and Safran’s CFM joint venture makes engines for the Boeing 737 Max and also for the Airbus A320neo family. Competitor Pratt and Whitney, a unit of Raytheon Technologies also makes engines for the Airbus 320.

The RISE program will work on technology that could reduce fuel consumption by more than 20% and also be compatible with sustainable aviation fuel and hydrogen, they said.

The companies plan to design an engine that is open fan, which is unlike the covered jet-engines on commercial aircraft.

Niantic and Hasbro are making a Transformers AR game

Published

on

Niantic is tapping into another popular franchise for its next augmented reality game. Following the success of Pokémon Go and Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, Niantic is working with Hasbro, Tomy and developer Very Very Spaceship on a Transformers title.

In Transformers: Heavy Metal, you’ll get to “team up with the likes of Bumblebee and the Autobots in the real world,” according to executive producer Phil Hong. The game is built on Niantic’s Lightship AR multiplayer platform.

It seems you won’t have to wait too long to try it, either. There will be a soft launch in some countries soon and the global rollout is scheduled for later this year. You can pre-register, if you’re interested.

That’s not the only project Niantic has in the works. It’s developing Pikmin Go in collaboration with Nintendo, the first in a series of games the companies are making together.
