Eisenführ Speiser strengthens patent practice with Pinsent Masons litigator

Date:

Michael Schneider (51), who moves to Eisenführ Speiser on 1 May, specialises in patent infringement and nullity matters. He is particularly experienced in the technology and medical devices sectors.

Schneider’s most important clients include Neovasc Tiara, which he represents against Edwards Lifescience in the high-profile proceedings over a minimally-invasive heart valve technology. The Higher Regional Court of Munich is due to publish its ruling in the dispute in early May.

In addition, Schneider has experience in mobile phone and automotive patents. For example, he represented patent owner Enovsys in a dispute against Deutsche Telekom over data security in mobile location technology.

He also advises companies, mainly large to medium-sized, on mechanical patents. An example is his advice for French chairlift manufacturer LST in a dispute against competitor Innova.

Schneider brings mixed team experience

Michael Schneider brings almost 20 years of experience to his role at Eisenführ Speiser. He began his career in 2003 at mixed patent firm Meisner Bolte, where he joined the partner ranks after a few years. In April 2008, he joined Wragge & Co as part of the team that set up the Munich office for the Birmingham-based firm.

The firm initially merged with Lawrence Graham in 2014 to form Wragge Lawrence Graham. Another merger followed in 2016, this time with Canadian firm Gowling to form Gowling WLG.

In 2017, Michael Schneider was one of several IP partners to leave Gowling for Pinsent Masons. This left Gowling without a patent practice virtually overnight. Painstakingly, the firm rebuilt this practice over the following years. However, Gowling recently once again lost its entire patent team in Germany.

From south to north

At Eisenführ Speiser, Michael Schneider will be part of a mixed team of 40 patent attorneys and six patent litigators. The mixed IP firm boasts a broad technical setup both in prosecution and disputes, with offices in Hamburg, Bremen, Berlin and Munich.

So far, the firm has concentrated its litigation work in the two northern German offices. From Munich, Michael Schneider will mainly cooperate with the Hamburg team, especially with regards to litigation over medical device patents.

However, the Eisenführ Speiser litigation team is also increasingly involved in mobile communications suits. The firm’s regular clients include Sisvel and HEVC Advance Pool, the representation of which have allowed Eisenführ’s patent attorneys and attorneys to demonstrate their SEP and FRAND expertise.

Following Michael Schneider’s departure from Pinsent Masons, five patent-specialist lawyers – one of whom is a partner – remain in the firm’s German patent team.
