Edward Gaming has just swept Top Esports and secured a spot in the 2021 LPL Spring Split semifinals. Reaching such a point in the playoffs is already a praiseworthy achievement, but doing so in such staggeringly dominant fashion only adds to EDG’s already potent narrative. To play as well as they did in a region as stacked with talent as the LPL is a true testament to their skill and overall potential.

Then again, it seems as though nothing over in the LPL makes sense. Most folks didn’t expect FunPlus Phoenix to outclass Royal Never Give Up as much as they did, and the same goes for this Best of 5 as well. Now, Top Esports made a slew of mistakes against Suning, but the fashion in which EDG punished and capitalized was astounding.

And sure, they’ve been the better team overall throughout the regular portion of the split, but most fans thought TES was on an upswing given how they’d handled Suning a couple of days ago. That hype train, however, didn’t last for long.

A Most Obvious Mid Gap

The first game was fairly even, but despite TES fighting back to the best of their ability, Lee “Scout” Ye-chan never gave them a big enough opening to turn the tides. His performance on Ryze was sublime in every sense of the word. With an 8/0/7 KDA, he was not only EDG’s most important catalyst but also the one player who pushed them over the finish line. Park” Viper” Do-hyeon, of Griffin fame, delivered as well, but only once his seasoned mid laner took the reins and started punishing TES at the most crucial moments of the game.

His two next Sylas games, however, were even more impressive. To TES’ credit, they definitely kept things close, but even though EDG didn’t have any huge gold leads to work with, they played with so much more fervor and confidence that TES couldn’t mount a comeback, no matter what they tried or attempted. It was an absolute masterclass in every sense of the word.

EDG was faster on the map. They rotated more quickly; they got all the neutral objectives they could and made TES look like a much less dangerous opponent than one would expect given their talent and overall depth. The third game was the closest of the bunch, but EDG still found a crucial opening and punished TES with two exceptionally executed team fights around the Dragon pit. Soon enough, Scout and Viper (Sylas and Tristana) had too much damage to work with, and it was only a matter of time before they overwhelmed TES and closed things out in grand fashion.

A Spectacular Finish

Only four Best of 5s left to be played before the first LPL champion of 2021 is crowned. And, well, if the recent matches are any indication, it’s fair to say that we’re in for quite a show! It matters very little whom you’re rooting for as all of the four remaining teams have a metric ton of talent and will fight their hearts out regardless of the odds. Plus, in all fairness, it’s impossible to predict who’ll eventually come out on top, which makes things all the more exciting!

Top Esports will first take on Royal Never Give Up in the lower half of the bracket, with Edward Gaming going up against FunPlus Phoenix. The first Best of 5 of the two (scheduled for April 10) is a lot more interesting as it’s a “do or die” kind of moment for both TES and RNGU. The stakes are high, and the margin for error is non-existent. This is generally always the case in the LPL where even the smallest mistakes tend to be punished severely.

Either way, make sure to tune in, as we’ll probably witness a ton of mind-blowing League of Legends!
