Creating Physical Experiences Online.

Date:

As companies and brands are seeking to translate physical experiences such as town halls, conferences and art shows into the virtual world, what opportunities does the digital space offer to touch, move and inspire?

Tanya Wilson

The virtual space offers many opportunities to bring communities of like-minded people from around the world together at the same time for a shared experience. When designing virtual experiences, we shouldn’t start with the possibilities or limitations of the digital medium, but rather focus on the experience of the visitor.

  1. Visual Appeal

Promote the event exactly as you would a physical event. It needs to be an attractive proposition that is worth people’s time (even if they are obliged to come)

2. Create a Journey

More than ever people are looking for unique experiences for escapism and connection to others. Create anticipation by welcoming everyone at a set time in a virtual waiting room (such as Zoom) and create an impressive entrance.

4. Virtual Reality: Do We Live In Our Brain’s Simulation Of The World?

By hosting the experience in a single space, the Akira exhibition created intimacy, but this could easily be extended to multiple rooms with a different experience in each one. Such as talks, fireside chats, film screening, quizzes — a timetable can incite visitors to convene at the same time in different spaces.

3. Tell a Story

Storytelling will draw your visitor into the experience and keep them engaged. Consider details such as lighting, sound, they contribute to connecting emotionally and creating something really memorable. A sign that you’re telling a great story is when journalists are willing to write about it.

4. Tech Second

Imagine the experience then find the suitable tech. The Akira show was created in a real-time 3D creation platform, and the panoramic images were uploaded to a 360 virtual tour creator. The show can be enjoyed VR as well as on a browser.
