Code Council opens applications for its IECC Development Committees

WASHINGTON, March 19, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — The International Code Council has announced its call for committees for the development of its 2024 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC). Under the Code Council’s new framework, Leading the Way to Energy Efficiency: A Path Forward on Energy and Sustainability to Confront a Changing Climate, the IECC will be developed by the combined efforts of a Residential Energy Code Consensus Committee and a Commercial Energy Code Consensus Committee.

The responsibilities of the committees include:

  • Reviewing and evaluating public input in accordance with the requirements of the Code Council’s Consensus Procedures, and building consensus to incorporate input that advances the code’s new scope, intent and principles;
  • Ensuring any interested public party has the opportunity to provide input on components such as recommending changes to the IECC and commenting on proposed changes;
  • Considering the market-readiness of technologies to be incorporated into the code; and
  • Producing a code that meets the requirements contained in the new scope, intent and principles.

The goal is to include approximately 30 members for each committee that represent a diverse array of experience in building types and energy efficiency strategies, as well as racial, gender and socio-economic diversity. Committee members can represent nine different interest groups – manufacturers, builders, standards promulgators/testing laboratories, users, utilities, consumers, public segments, government regulators and insurance. No single category will constitute more than one-third of the membership of any committee. One third of the seats on the committees will be filled by government regulators, who will also serve as committee chairs. All appointments will be consistent with Code Council Policies 7 and 12 and the Code Council’s Consensus Procedures.

“Updated every three years, the IECC will ensure wide adoption and cost effectiveness through continuous maintenance to allow ongoing discussion and the incorporation of provisions responsive to changes in building technology,” said Dominic Sims, CBO, Chief Executive Officer of the Code Council. “As we build out the IECC Development Committees, we are looking for dedicated professionals who are fully committed to the vision and work necessary to help communities and the building sector meet energy efficiency and greenhouse gas reduction goals.”

Chindata Group tops Greenpeace renewable energy rankings in China’s tech industry

BEIJING, April 23, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Chindata Group (NASDAQ: CD), the only carrier-neutral digital infrastructure platform in the Asia-Pacific region, once again scored first (85 out of 100) in the latest clean energy rankings among the China’s tech industry with a perfect score (40 out of 40) on renewable energy performance.

The annual renewable energy use in Chindata Group’s owned data centers reached 505 million kilowatts-hours in 2020, accounting for fifty-one percent of its total power consumption. This amount took up 0.02 percent of China’s power generation capacity in 2020. Meanwhile, Chindata Group is promoting the construction of China’s Internet technology industry’s first 150MW photovoltaic power station to meet its own energy needs.

EPRI CEO: U.S. Must Triple the Rate of Energy-Related Carbon Reduction to Achieve 2030 Goal

PALO ALTO, Calif., April 22, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — The Biden administration today pledged to reduce U.S. economy-wide carbon emissions to around 50 percent below 2005 levels by 2030. The goal amounts to a 2 gigaton (Gt) reduction in annual, energy-related U.S. carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 2030 – triple the rate (3X) of carbon reduction achieved from 2005 to 2020, when annual emissions were reduced by 1 Gt.

In a statement today, EPRI President and CEO Arshad Mansoor said, “We know the timing, we understand the trajectory, and we have the technical expertise to get there. We must redouble collaboration across all stakeholders to accelerate an affordable and reliable clean energy transition.”

Because other sectors, such as transportation, buildings and industry, could largely reduce carbon emissions through electrification, the power sector will play a crucial role in achieving the administration’s 2030 economy-wide goal. EPRI released a graphical depiction of the accelerated rate of reduction across sectors.

Mansoor said, “The power sector has an early lead in the race to decarbonize, but every sector must cross the finish line to be successful. Near-term decisions and actions – from policy to regulation to technology deployment – will be crucial to drive economy-wide decarbonization in the decade ahead.”
