Can CBD Lower Blood Pressure?

High blood pressure — often called the silent killer because many people who have it typically do not experience symptoms — is a serious condition that can cause many other health problems and even lead to death.

High blood pressure is linked to higher risks of many health conditions, including:

The CDC estimates that about half of the adults in the United States have high blood pressure. Even worse, only about 1 in 4 of those have it under control.

And in 2018, close to half a million deaths in the US included hypertension as the main cause or a contributor.

There are two types of high blood pressure: primary or essential hypertension and secondary hypertension.

Primary hypertension, which affects most adults, has no identifiable cause and usually develops gradually over time.

Secondary hypertension appears suddenly and causes higher blood pressure than primary. It is caused by underlying conditions, such as:

  • Smoking
  • Obesity
  • Lack of physical activity
  • Too much alcohol consumption
  • Stress
  • Older age
  • Chronic kidney disease
  • Adrenal or thyroid disorders
  • Pain
  • Sleep apnea
  • Genetics
  • Family history of high blood pressure
  • Illegal drugs, such as cocaine and amphetamines
  • Certain medications such as birth control pills, cold remedies, and decongestants

THCP and CBDP – Powerful New Cannabinoids Found

It seems that everyday something new is being learned about the cannabis plant. New cannabinoids, terpenes, flavonoids, etc., all with their own benefits. One of the more interesting finds of late is THCP and CBDP, and though information is currently limited on these THC-like compounds, they both show a possibility of being stronger than the cannabinoids we’re already familiar with.

With THCP and CBDP coming out, there’s a whole new direction to go in with cannabis. However, we know way less about them than we do about delta-8 THC, another newcomer to the cannabis products market. Delta-8 is interesting because it functions much like delta-9 THC, but without producing anxiety and paranoia, or couch locking users. In fact, delta-8 is associated with a more clear-headed high and more energy in general, which makes it preferable for many cannabis users. Are you one of them? Check out our assortment of Delta-8 THC deals and order some today.

Is there more than one kind of THC?

Yes and no. The term THC (tetrahydrocannabinols) refers to a specific chemical structure: C21H30O2. However, this chemical structure can produce different, though similar, molecules, also known as isomers. Meaning the chemical formula is the same, but the configuration of atoms within the molecule is different. There are different kinds of isomers to denote these differences in configuration. In the case of THC, the version we are most familiar with, and which is most associated with the psychoactive effects of cannabis, is delta-9 THC.

The ‘9’ in delta-9 denotes the ninth carbon atom in a chain where a double bond occurs. When this double bond moves to the 8th atom, it becomes the isomer delta-8 THC. If it’s on the 10th atom, it becomes delta-10. Delta-8 is a naturally occurring isomer, which is created through the oxidation of delta-9 when it comes into contact with oxygen. In this process, the delta-9 THC molecule loses electrons and stabilizes to form delta-8. This happens in tiny amounts, and for larger quantities, human synthetization help is required. Delta-10, on the other hand, does not occur naturally in nature – for whatever reason – and therefore can only be formed synthetically. CBD has the same chemical formula, definitionally making it a tetrahydrocannabinol – just not the ‘THC’ we think of, when we think of ‘THC’.

The Delta 8 Weekly Newsletter.

When THC is consumed in edible form, it produces stronger, longer-lasting effects. This is because the THC is metabolized in the liver, where it’s transformed into 11-ydroxy-THC, with this chemical formula: C21H30O3. This is not THC, or an isomer or analogue of THC. It’s a metabolite of THC, with many similar properties. This compound was created synthetically as an analogue by Raphael Mechoulam and team at Hebrew University, with the name HU-210. This means it is structurally and functionally almost identical to the compound its a synthetic of. This compound, 1,1-Dimethylheptyl-11-hydroxy-tetrahydrocannabinol, has this chemical formula: C25H38O3, and is said by the researching team to be anywhere from 100-800 times stronger than delta-9 THC.

Mechoulam seems to like finding stronger THC versions. Another major discovery of his is cannabidiolic acid methyl ester (HU-580). This fully stable, acid-based molecule has this chemical formula: C23H32O4, and is a synthetic analogue of THC. Plus, there’s also THCA – C22H30O4, the precursor acid to THC, which is what is actually abundant in fresh cannabis flowers. This THCA decarboxylates (loses a carboxyl group COOH) to form THC. THC, is therefore an analogue of THCA.

On December 30th, 2019, Italian researchers discovered two new phytocannabinoids. The reason they are ‘phytocannabinoids’ and not ‘cannabinoids’ is that plants only produce phytocannabinoids, and they do so in acidic form, hence the fact that the precursor to THC, is THCA (tetrahydrocannabinolic acid) – the acid form. These acids transform into neutral cannabinoids when the acid goes through decarboxylation.

Italian researchers working on the UNIHEMP project were in the midst of investigating FM2 which is a medical cannabis strain. The research team observed two different phytocannabinoids that had not been reported before. They were able to isolate the compounds, and then artificially synthesized them for reference and verification of the naturally occurring molecules. The two cannabinoids in question are THCP (tetrahydrocannabiphorol), and CBDP (cannabidiphorol) which have this chemical formula: C23H34O2.

Now the question becomes, how are these molecules similar to THC and CBD. THCP is a certain type of analogue, called a homolog. This means it is nearly structurally the same, but belongs to a group that differs according to a repeating unit, in this case an alkyl side chain. This is the first cannabinoid found with more than five carbon atoms in the chain. Prior to its finding, THC had the longest sidechains of any known cannabinoid. These alkyl chains consisted of five atoms, with the length helping to determine the longevity and potency of the molecule. THCP has seven atoms on its alkyl side chain. It was found that THCP binds to both CB1 and CB2 receptors easily, and at CB1 receptors the molecule is 33% more active than THC, and 10% more active at CB2 receptor sites.

The compounds themselves are probably fine, but even research professionals would be unlikely to make that statement based on what’s out there right now. However, the compounds themselves are not the big issue. Sure they could be toxic in high amounts, or cause interactions not foreseen, but our experience with cannabis thus far tells us its probably okay. When it comes to the safety issues of these products, the majority have nothing to do with the form of cannabis being used, but with the methods of production.

For that reason, buyers should beware, as no regulation is in place to stop prospective sellers from saying anything they want. If a buyer wants to purchase such a product, they should do so from a company they are familiar with and trust, and one that provides the highest level of safety information available. Most ‘lab tests’ on vendor sites are simply readouts of the amounts and types of cannabinoids. And while this is good to at least verify that the active ingredients being paid for are there, it does absolutely nothing to explain or verify the synthetization or processing methods, or the chemicals used. And this is where things can get sticky.

We already know that synthetics aren’t the biggest deal, as anyone who bought a vape cart from a non-official dispensary has smoked a good bit of something K2 like. Regardless of the ‘epidemic’ pushed by the government, vapes have shown to be way less harmful than standard smoking EXCEPT when bad additives are used like vitamin-e acetate. Vitamin-e acetate isn’t what people are paying for with a vape. The thing they’re paying for won’t hurt them at all. But the inclusion of vitamin-e acetate created an unsafe product. Until regulation methods are in place for the production of these products, there will always be a danger about how they are made.

THCP and CBDP vape carts
Scone Boys CBDP vape carts

As of right now, there is no official information out there on these compounds apart from the one study where they were found. This should be remembered when looking at the marketing information of products.

THCP and CBDP products

There are companies that are foregoing waiting enough time to ensure safety for their clientele, and in this world, buyers get to choose how much risk they want to take. Companies that are better about providing safety information will likely not be selling these products at the moment, since they wouldn’t be able to verify anything for users, as no information on the subject exists. This means, all available options are more likely to be companies that are questionable in terms of general product safety.

As a person who has bought plenty of dicey products in life, I know full well that this doesn’t have to mean anything bad. But as a person who does like to be careful, I, myself, would require a little more before buying into this emerging fad. But that’s me, and I’m not everyone. So, for those who want to give what’s out there a shot, here’s an option to try.

One company that went in on it fast, is Sconi Boys from Wisconsin. Besides a line of delta-8 products, the company also has THCP and CBDP vape cartridges. These 1ml carts cost $59.99 each and have lab results to verify the cannabinoids within, meaning whatever benefits there are to these compounds should be easily experienced by the user. These carts are a great way for anyone interested in these new compounds to try them out.

THCP and CBDP vape carts

Sconi Boys also puts out some interesting delta-8 products like Delta-8 Cookies. These delicious looking oatmeal raisin, brown sugar, caramel cookies, have 25mg of delta-8 per cookie, come in packs of two, and cost $15.99. Or the Delta-8 Tincture, which contains 1,000mg of delta-8 in flavors like Lemon Drop, Starkist, Apple Jack, Vanilla Bean, and Berry Rose, and costs $39.99 for each 1oz bottle.

The cannabis plant is home to so many different compounds that we just don’t know about all of them yet. Through time, there will likely be more discoveries just like this one. THCP and CBDP are interesting because it appears they could be much more powerful than standard delta-9 THC and CBD, and possibly with different and/or stronger health benefits. Hopefully in the near future there will be more info to go on, and more products for use.

CBN Yourself to Sleep Tonight with These Products

Medical cannabis offers benefits for many different ailments, and one of the predominant ones in medical literature is connected to sleep. Which part of the plant is responsible for this? It looks like cannabinoid CBN might be partially responsible, at least in conjunction with other elements of the plant. CBN sleep products are already becoming quite popular.

Delta-8 THC is a great reminder that not all THCs are created equally. Whereas delta-9 THC is known for causing anxiety in some users, and leading to couch-locking effects, delta-8 does neither of these things. This provides a better option for those disenfranchised with the anxiety and heaviness of delta-9. If you’re looking to switch up your THC, give our collection of Delta-8 THC deals a look-thru, and we’ll ship you out your products ASAP.

What is CBN?

We’re all pretty aware of what the cannabis plant is at this point. We’re all pretty aware, whether we agree with the statements or not, that there is a growing body of medical research in support of the positive benefits of marijuana for a number of different medical issues, as well as for recreational purposes. By now, most of us are even aware that the US designates higher-THC cannabis as marijuana, and lower-THC cannabis as hemp, with a cutoff line at .3% THC to make the designation.

When looking into the plant closer, we can designate different effects of the plant to different molecules like THC, CBD, and limonene. We know there are cannabinoids, terpenes, flavonoids, and other plant constituents, some of which are useful, and some of which we aren’t as concerned with. THC, of course, is the main psychoactive component, with a Schedule I spot in the Controlled Substances list of the US, while also being in Schedule I of both the Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs, and the Convention on Psychotropic Substances.

THC isn’t the only psychoactive compound though. Not only does delta-9 THC oxidize to form another version of THC called delta-8, but there are other cannabinoids – albeit showing up in very small quantities – that also have psychoactive properties, and one of these is CBN, or cannabinol.

CBN was the first cannabinoid of the cannabis plant to be isolated, and technically way before any other cannabinoid. In 1899 Thomas Wood, W.T. Spivey and Thomas Easterfield obtained the molecule from a sample of charas, which is a form of cannabis resin. They used alcohol to extract from the charas, and then ran the tincture through a fractional distillation process to produce a viscous oil. From here, they performed the chemical reaction acetylation to discover CBN. In the 1930’s, Robert S. Cahn was the first person to figure out its structure – giving it the name cannabinol, with the first synthesis done in the early 1940s by Roger Adams.

researchers putting it at 4/10 the strength, and the compound prefers CB2 receptors to CB1 receptors in the brain. While both THC and CBN activate the CB1 and CB2 receptors, there is a fundamental difference between the cannabinoids.

CBN vs delta THCs

CBN and tetrahydrocannabinols (THC) both activate CB receptors in the brain, both have pscyhaoactive effects, and are both cannabinoids. But there is a fundamental difference which comes down to structure. The thing that delta-8, delta-9, and delta-10 THCs all have in common is that they have the same chemical structure of C21H30O2. They are isomers of each other because this chemical structure stays the same, with the only variation being in the placement of a double carbon bond. In delta-8 THC its on the 8th carbon atom in the chain, for delta-9 on the 9th, and for delta-10 on the 10th.

On the other hand, CBN has this chemical structure: C21H26O2, which is different than tetrahydrocannabinols. Unlike tetrahydrocannabinols which are isomers of each other, CBN has no stereoisomers or geometric isomers, meaning it doesn’t share its chemical structure with another molecule that has the same number of atoms of each element, but different configurations. So, whereas several different tetrahydrocannabinols have been found, only one CBN exists.

CBN isn’t specifically listed in the Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs, or the Convention on Psychotropic Substances, like THC is. This means that all signing countries of these conventions are not bound by international law to regulate CBN. This is in direct contrast to THC which is listed in both treaties. In the US, CBN is illegal under federal law just like THC. This covers its use medically as well as for use in food products or as additives. CBN is not specifically named in the DEA Controlled Substances list, but it remains a Schedule I controlled substance.

The sale of CBN products, and having possession of them is prosecutable by the Federal Analogue Act. CBN is an analogue of THC because the chemical structure is nearly the same, with also very similar pharmacological and medical properties. This is a debatable point as no clarification has been made about CBN in the Interim Final Rule by the DEA, or the Final Rule by the USDA.

CBN and sleep

The first thing to understand when looking into CBN sleep products, is that cannabinol has not been studied intensely. Though its easy to believe that claims about it have merit since we know cannabis is associated with lots of medical benefits, the jury is most definitely still out as to the exact effects of CBN. However, one of the most spoken about benefits of CBN, is for sleep. This, unfortunately has not really been medically verified, and requires more study.

In fact, two of the only studies that point in the direction of CBN being useful for sleep have to do with a combination of THC and CBN. In this 1975 study Effects of delta9-tetrahydrocannabinol and cannabinol in man, there was found a possible synergistic effect with delta-9 THC in five men. The study investigators made this statement about delta-9 and CBN being used in tandem:

“With combined drug treatment, volunteers reported feeling more drugged, drunk, dizzy, and drowsy than under the delta9-THC condition alone… It appears that CBN increases the effect of delta9-THC on some aspects of physiological and psychological processes, but that these effects are small and cannot account for the greater potency which has been reported when plant material is used.”

This other study: Pharmacologic interaction between cannabinol and delta9-tetrahydrocannabinol from 1975 also looked at the interaction between delta-9 and CBN in mice, rats and rabbits. It found CBN to be less potent than delta-9, but otherwise mimicking delta-9 effects. According to the study authors: “When the mixture delta9-THC + CBN was used, a synergistic effect occurred on most of the depressant effects.”

Apart from this, there haven’t been other studies that specifically identify CBN as a sleep agent. The thing is, when looking at overall cannabis research, there are often tons of contradicting study articles, with information gained over time that better elucidates what starts off as confusing and inconsistent. So ruling out CBN is also just as silly at this point. There does seem to be plenty of anecdotal evidence backing up this property…which is also the way cannabis as a medicine started to become big – through personal experiences being shared. These reddit posts exemplify that people do seem to be getting a sedative effect (although whether these are paid-for posts, or confused users can’t be said).

CBN sleep products

In the tradition of waiting for more information before making judgements, and in trying new products to see what can work, here are some of the CBN products on the market that can be tried for help with sleep. All of these options are combinations including CBN.

Click HERE for a list of Delta 8 + CBN Tinctures

Gossamer puts out Dusk, a cannabinoid sleep aid with a variety of ingredients in each one-ounce bottle, like 300mg of full spectrum CBD, CBN in high levels, and terpenes: Myrcene, B-Caryophyllene, Linalool, and Citral. This product is sourced from pesticide and GMO-free hemp, and costs $65 ($58.50 with subscription).

Another option is Dr. Dabbs Everyday CBD Premium Nighttime CBD Gummy’s with 300mg of CBD and 30mg of CBN. This product is sourced from 100% USDA certified organic hemp, comes in a delicious blue-raspberry flavor, and contains 30 gummies in a package. Each package costs $65.

Yet another possibility includes delta-8 THC, an isomer of delta-9, which has already been shown to help with sleep, as well as anxiety. Whereas delta-9 can produce anxiety in users, delta-8 is not known for this. The company VIIA Premium Hemp Products puts out its Delta 8 + CBN – Sleep Vape Cartridge. This sleep-inducing combination contains a total of 1,000mg of cannabis constituents in this breakdown: 500mg delta-8 THC, 250mg CBN, 200mg of CBC, CBG, and CBD, with 50mg in terpenes. Each one-gram cart costs $40.

CBN Sleep Products – Conclusion

It’s hard to know the exact effects of CBN because it’s way too early in the research cycle to say. But, as mentioned, that doesn’t rule anything out, and sometimes the best way of figuring out which part of a plant like cannabis is good for what, is to just give different things a try. After all, not every product works the same way for everyone, and it takes time to figure these things out. So it doesn’t make sense at this point to rule out CBN sleep products at all. Especially when combined with other cannabinoids and terpenes. We’ll know way more about it in the next few years, no doubt.

Conservative Cannabis: Legalization Gaining Republican Support

These days Americans are more divided than ever: republican vs democrat, conservative vs liberal, different views on healthcare and pandemic response, and numerous other economic and social issues prevail – there is one thing that nearly everyone seems to agree on though, cannabis legalization.

It’s a commonly held assumption that democrats favor cannabis (to an extent) and conservative republicans don’t, and traditionally that’s been true. But ballot initiates in numerous different red states show that republicans and independent conservatives are coming around on legalization issues. It’s one of the few topics that seems to garner support across the board, regardless of which side of the political line you’re looking at.

Delta 8 + Delta 10 THC Vape Cartridges

“The prevailing wisdom has been that a conservative administration would be less receptive, but I think cannabis legalization is now inevitable on its own kinetic energy,” said Sturges Karban, chief executive officer of cannabis logistics company ManifestSeven. “While federal legalization was a political ‘third rail’ as recently as 2016, it now looks as though 2021 will be a turning point for the industry.”

The world of cannabis is always evolving, especially when it comes to regulations. To learn more about cannabis legislation, make sure to subscribe to The CBD Flowers Weekly Newsletter, where you will get all the latest news as well as access to exclusive deals on flowers and other products.

“People are just much less afraid of marijuana”

This year, we have a lot of action in unexpected states. With cannabis use becoming increasingly prevalent around the world, especially following all the changes brought on by COVID-19, it seems that new legislation at the federal level is inevitable. There are quite a few republican states that already have very lax rules regarding cannabis, and some numerous swing states that have legalized it completely.

Currently, 16 states and Washington D.C. have fully legalized adult-use cannabis, 37 states have implemented some type of medical cannabis program, and 46 states have “decriminalized” cannabis to some extent. A survey of 500 New Jersey voters, conducted by legal firm Branch Eichler LLC, found that a higher-than-expected number of republicans support adult-use cannabis – 75% of democrats and 52% of republicans.

“People are just much less afraid of marijuana than they used to be,” said John Fanburg, who co-chairs the cannabis practice at the New Jersey-based law firm that conducted the poll. He attributes that to the state’s “successful medical program, which has grown from 20,000 participants three years ago to 90,000, removing the stigma of marijuana for thousands of people on both sides of the political aisle.”

Red States Considering Cannabis

Conservative states have been a bit slower to adapt to the changing times, however, there seems to be a major shift in viewpoints over the last few months with numerous cannabis-related bills being introduced in these areas. One of the most notable being Texas. Within the last month, the Texas senate approved several bills for cannabis decriminalization, as well as to expand the existing medical industry, lower the penalty on THC concentrates, and to force the study of psychedelics.

Last month, Tennessee Governor Bill Lee passed a limited medical cannabis bill that would raise the cutoff for THC in hemp products to 0.9%, three times higher than the federal limit. Also, a handful of new disorders would be added to the state’s list of qualifying medical conditions for cannabis use. Louisiana just passed House Bill 391 which will allow dispensaries to sell smokable flower products, while allowing patients to buy up to 2.5 ounces every 14 days.

Last month, Governor Kay Ivey officially signed into law the medical marijuana bill that we’ve been tracking, making Alabama the 37th state in the U.S. to legalize medical cannabis; and there have also been notable changes in Wyoming, Idaho, Mississippi, and Kansas.

“The conservative states are empirical evidence that there’s enough demand and support at the grassroots level that the issue of cannabis is agnostic to party,” Karban said. “How do you ignore that if you’re in Washington? As bipartisan support for legalization grows in states across the country, there’s increased likelihood of change at the federal level, too.”

What’s up with Biden?

Although blue is known for being the “forward-thinking” party, with most democratic politicians showing some level of support for fair marijuana reform, our current president doesn’t have the best track-record when it comes to cannabis legislation and the subsequent social equity issues that come par for the course with drug prohibition. In the 1980s, Biden was actually very committed to the war on drugs, with a heavy focus on cannabis, helping draft numerous pieces of legislation that would keep low-level, non-violent drug offenders incarcerated for years to come.

As of 2010, his opinions hadn’t changed much and he can be quoted saying, “There’s a difference between sending someone to jail for a few ounces [of marijuana] and legalizing. The punishment should fit the crime. But I think legalization is a mistake. I still believe [marijuana] is a gateway drug.” So far, that’s roughly 30 years of Biden against cannabis.

Fast forward another decade and Joe Biden is the 46th president of the United States, during a time when cannabis legalization is an incredibly polarizing topic on many fronts: economic, social, and health institutions all have a major stake in the industry. At the very least it seems Biden has accepted that cannabis legalization is inevitable, and even mentioned that he thinks “it is at the point where it has to be, basically, legalized.”

Looking for the BEST deals on Delta 8 THC?

Delta 8 THC Gummies

However, he maintains his stance in favor of decriminalization over full legalization. But as we already know from watching the many states that have tried it already, decriminalization is a completely pointless step in between prohibition and legalization that allows for too much “interpretation” of the law.

In his latest move. In March of this year, at least five members of the Biden administration had their employment terminated, and dozen more were forced to “resign” for admitting to past marijuana use. This is move is right on the heels of an announcement made just one month prior, in February, in which the Biden Administration stated that past marijuana use would not disqualify someone from employment with the federal government.

Final Thoughts of Cannabis in Conservative States

Note that I’m a moderate, sometimes I align with conservative ideals and sometimes I lean liberal, so this is NOT an attempt to push people towards a republican vote. On the contrary, this shows that even in a world meant to divide us, there are still some topics that have the power to bring people together. When it comes to cannabis legalization, the overwhelming majority of Americans are tired of prohibition and ready for progress.

I can personally attest to this. Having been raised blue California where cannabis has been legal in some fashion since the 90s, and currently living in Indiana, one of the most cannabis-restrictive states in the nation – everyone I have met so far in both states support legalization. Either they consume cannabis products themselves, or they just don’t care if other people do.

The attitude toward cannabis these days is much more laissez-faire, and rightfully so. At its worst, cannabis a harmless substance that induces a mild psychoactive high. At its best, we have a powerful, therapeutic plant that can be used to treat a myriad of different conditions, greatly improving ones quality of life. To legalize seems like the only logical option at this point, regardless of what political party one supports.

How to make cannabutter

The easiest way to decarboxylate cannabis is to crumble your weed into the consistency of granola, spread it evenly on a cookie sheet pan and bake it in the oven for 30 minutes at about 250 degrees. Shuffle the contents around every ten minutes or so to maintain an even surface area. Some people like to use a piece of parchment paper. If you have a notoriously hot oven then compensate by lowering the temperature by a few degrees. The important thing is to take care not to overheat the herb as its valuable chemical compounds can be damaged.

Remove the baking sheet from the oven and set aside to cool. Note that the cannabis will have turned from green to brown. Be careful. The herb will be hot and the consistency will be more crumbly. Your previously benign cannabis is now decarboxylated, which means that it may now possess potent potential psychoactivity, depending on the strain’s THC content.

Alternatively, especially for those that make regular large quantities of edibles, there are commercial decarboxylators available.

You can use high grade THC-dominant buds for this process or high-CBD strains, but some people prefer to use plant trimmings following harvest, otherwise known as “shake”, which can still contain significant active ingredients. The potency of your decarboxylated cannabis is directly proportional to the potential chemical content of the particular cultivar you are working with ie. the ratio of CBD to THC.

A word of caution: if you buy your weed from anywhere other than a government regulated source, then take care to avoid product that has been grown using harmful pesticides and chemical residues that can end up in your butter. The better quality the herb, the better quality the cannabis butter.

Note that some people prefer to skip the decarboxylation stage altogether and just heat their weed in butter for longer to activate the chemical compounds, but it typically results in less potent cannabutter.
