Build Your Own Retro VR Arcade In ‘Arcade Legend’

Upgrade and customize your very own old-school gaming paradise.

LAI Games is an Australian-based company with location-based entertainment venues all around the world. Chance are if you’ve stepped into an arcade to play an old-school ticket redemption game, chances are LAI Games was involved.

In 2017, the company worked with Ubisoft to develop a VR attraction called Virtual Rabbids: The Big Ride, which received high praise from both developers as well as players and is now considered a game-changer for the arcade industry. Now, the company is ready to launch its next immersive endeavor with its first-ever in-home VR game, Arcade Legend.

Think of it sort of like a game within a game. Here’s the scoop: you’ve just inherited a dilapidated arcade and its up to you to return what was once a world-class family entertainment destination to its former glory as the ultimate gaming haven.

To do that you’ll need to unravel a series of deep mysteries surrounding the old arcade. Each time you unlock a mystery, you are rewarded with a new feature that you can use to upgrade and customize your arcade. As you continue to improve your space, you’ll attract more customers and raise greater revenue which can be used to purchase official LAI Games titles.

As the owner, it’s up to you to rearrange and customize your arcade to fit new games while maintaining an aesthetically pleasing playspace. You can control the settings of each individual game and earn prizes that can be used to customize your avatars or the interior of your VR arcade. There’s even a global leaderboard, allowing you and your friends to compete against players around the world.

When Arcade Legend launches, players will be able to play 4 LAI Games classics: Let’s Bounce, HYPERshoot, Speed of Light, and the very popular Stacker! While it’s true these are far from modern games, they still hold a lot of nostalgia for gamers, and bringing them into VR offers a fun and exciting twist on retro gaming.

For most of us, going to an arcade is a social experience. Arcade Legend can support up to 4 players in one arcade, plus NPC’s (non-player characters). As the reputation of your arcade improves, you’ll start seeing more and more NPC customers hanging out and bringing in moolah to your growing arcade business.

During an interview with VRScout, LAI Games Marketing Director, Tabor Carlton (no relation), said, “Let’s Bounce, HYPERshoot and Speed of Light are all arcade industry award-winning games, and Speed of Light, in particular, has amassed a cult-following on YouTube. These super physical games translate really well to VR, and leveraging the virtual environment to augment the games even further has been a lot of fun,” adding, “Stacker was our best-selling game of all-time, and you’ll still see them in arcades, malls, cinemas, or pizza joint game rooms all over the world today.”

Visually, Arcade Legend features a cool retro digital cyberpunk look that reminds me of older arcades from the ’80s. It’s designed to “look advanced but the aesthetic is vintage,” said Carlton. He goes on to talk about how arcades were once at the forefront of gaming and computer technology. Arcade Legend pays its respects to this legendary era in gaming while embracing the now by offering players access to an old-school arcade filled with cutting-edge technology.

Moving forward, the company hopes to include additional games outside the LAI Games catalog. Discussions are already underway with several game developers and the team hopes to offer additional officially licensed arcade games over time. As a matter of fact, Carlton tells me that they have already reached an agreement to bring one legendary arcade game into Arcade Legend.

LAI Games will conduct a beta test before releasing an official game demo during Steam’s Next Fest in June. They’ve already created a “coming soon” page on Steam which you can view here.

As of right now, the company is focused primarily on the SteamVR platform.

“I think people will be genuinely surprised about some of the things they’ll be able to unlock and do inside their arcade!”

First VR Film Shot Aboard ISS Available On Oculus Venues

Avatar

Published

Watch Episode One of Space Explorers: The ISS Experience free for a limited time as part of National Space Day.

In honor of National Space Day, Oculus will be streaming a 24-hour loop of developer Felix & Paul’s groundbreaking VR film, Space Explorers: The ISS Experience.

Beginning today through May 10th, those with an Oculus Quest or Oculus Rift headset can check out Episode One of the four-part 360-degree series 100% free-of-charge via Oculus TV and Oculus Venues. The largest production ever shot in space, Episode One: ADAPT, documents the arrival of several new crew members aboard the ISS and their experience adjusting to life in space. Throughout the roughly 24-minute 3D, 360-degree film, you’ll follow professional astronauts Anne McClain, David Saint-Jacques, Christina Koch, and Nick Hague, as they overcome a variety of challenges unique to life in space, from disorientation caused by microgravity to various unexpected emergencies.

Developed over the course of two years, the entire series was shot, narrated, and crewed by the astronauts themselves, who ended up capturing an incredible 200 hours of cinematic 360-degree footage plus 18 hours of eye-opening video logs and interviews. The result is a rare, intimate look at the day-to-day lives of these modern-day pioneers, from their innovative scientific work to the shared meals and personal relationships developed while floating through the vacuum of space.

We had a chance to check out Episode Two of the revolutionary series, ADVANCE, during the 2021 Sundance Film Festival. Whereas Episode One focused on the arrival of new crew members, Episode Two follows three astronauts as they prepare to disembark the ISS and return to Earth.

I’m not exaggerating when I say Space Explorers: The ISS Experience is easily one of the most impactful VR films I’ve ever experienced in-headset. Whether it be the incredible 3D visuals afforded by Felix & Paul’s pioneering 360-degree camera—which was built specifically for use in space by astronauts—or the powerful video logs recorded by the crew, Space Explorers is the closest you’ll get to experiencing life in space without a degree in engineering or biological science. As a self-described space fanatic, I’m not afraid to admit that there were several moments throughout Episode One and Two that had me on the verge of tears.

Those with an Oculus Quest or Oculus Rift headset can check out Episode One on-demand for a limited time via Oculus TV. You can also catch a 24-hour loop of Part One via Oculus Venues.

Space Explorers Episode One Streaming For Free Until May 10 On Quest And Rift

Avatar

Published

The first episode of the immersive VR series Space Explorers will be available for free in Oculus TV and Oculus Venues until May 10 to celebrate National Space Day.

Space Explorers: The ISS Experience is available as a Quest and Rift app spread across four episodes, the first two of which are available now. However, to celebrate National Space Day on May 7, the first episode, Adapt, will be available to stream for free  until May 10.

It is now available on a 24-hour loop in Oculus Venues or on demand in Oculus TV until Monday. If you watch episode one and want more, you can download the Space Explorers app and purchase episode two. Episodes three and four aren’t available just yet, but are scheduled to release Fall 2021 and Winter 2021 respectively.

Here’s a synopsis of the first episode:

Episode One, “Adapt” documents the arrival of a new crew of astronauts aboard the International Space Station as they discover the joy, wonder and danger of living in space. Years of training come into play as the crew overcomes disorientation from microgravity, responds to potentially catastrophic emergencies, and learns to operate as a close-knit team. The extreme nature of this unique shared experience brings them to form family-like bonds.

Space Explorers is a Felix & Paul Studios and Time Studios production, and was filmed entirely in space using Felix & Paul Studios’ specialized 3D, 360-degree space camera. It is the largest production ever filmed in space.

The first episode goes for approximately 24 minutes and is available now on loop in Oculus Venues and on demand on Oculus TV for Quest and Rift.

Oculus Quest Might Be Getting Android Apps

Avatar

Published

on

You might soon be able to access some Android apps on your Oculus Quest.

VR YouTuber The Mysticle today tweeted images of Android apps listed in their Quest 2 library. According to the tweet, the apps appeared under the preview apps section of the store, which is primarily used for early access to native Quest apps, perhaps for multiplayer betas, Q&A testing or other reasons.

This was brought up on our discord today and I just had to check it out to make sure it was real. It sure is! These are under preview apps in the store. The developer name in info is “Android Apps For Quest” and the website seems to be Oculus. Are they finally adding popular apps pic.twitter.com/aUuTuTowLz

— TheMysticle (@TheMysticle) May 7, 2021

Images included in the tweet show popular apps like Zoom, TikTok, Spotify, Candy Crush and even Among Us sitting in the library. What they don’t show is any of these apps actually being used. Facebook declined to comment on the validity of the images, or if Quest might be getting Android app integration anytime soon.

Of course, Quest runs off of a version of the Android operating system, so it’s feasibly possible that the platform could run these apps. Presumably, they’d appear as 2D virtual windows you could interactive with by using your Touch controllers as pointers.

Why would you want to do that? Well, aside from accessing games and apps on your Quest 2, features like this could be very beneficial to Facebook’s Infinite Office app on Quest 2, which lets users get work done inside VR.

Quest wouldn’t be the first headset to support Android apps. Google and Lenovo’s Mirage Solo was able to run them with some simple tweaks in the headset’s backend. That was a Daydream headset, though, so it doesn’t really count.

Would you use Android apps on Quest? Let us know in the comments below!
