Brussels becomes Virgin Atlantic’s 4th busiest airport in less than a year of operation

Date:

Like many airlines, Virgin Atlantic shifted its focus from passenger flights to cargo operations amid a significant drop in travel demand thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic. Throughout 2020, the carrier built up its new cargo-only network, providing connectivity to airports it would not have normally served – including Brussels (Belgium), Milan (Italy) and Evenes (Norway).

For most carriers, cargo has in recent months been the main source of revenue. This is particularly evident with Virgin Atlantic who have shifted capacity from passenger flights so much so that Brussels Airport has become its 4th busiest airport.

“Since COVID turned all our worlds upside down 12 months ago our cargo partnerships in BRU have been a great success,” explains Paul Fallon, Virgin Atlantic’s Director of Commercial and Business Development. “In recent months our glorious 350s and 787s have visited over 200 times – connecting our EU based customers to our London hub and making BRU our 4th busiest airport.”

Virgin Atlantic’s cargo-only flights to Brussels began on 6 June, initially operating with a Boeing 787-9 on the London Heathrow-New York JFK-Brussels-London Heathrow sector twice a week. A month later, the New York-Brussels sector was suspended and the operation to the Belgian capital was reverted to a direct London-Brussels flight, operating three times a week. This has since increased immensely. The Boeing 787 was joined by the Airbus A350 on 2 September when Virgin Atlantic inaugurated A350-1000 operations on the Brussels sector. The flight was operated by G-VLUX.

Virgin Atlantic today operated a charter service between Brussels and Los Angeles, with 25 tonnes of cargo onboard.
