British Airways offers its customers a new fast bag-drop before check-in to avoid queues

  • British Airways customers travelling from Heathrow Terminal 5 will be able to drop off and check in their luggage with partner AirPortr as soon as they step off the Heathrow Express from July 19
  • The new fast bag drop service is free of charge to customers who have already checked in at home.
  • AirPortr also offers customers the opportunity to have their luggage collected and checked in from their home or office up to 24 hours before their flight, from £19
  • Luggage can be checked in at designated fast bag drop points* as soon as customers reach the airport, or alternatively they can pre-book a collection from their home or office online if preferred
  • The airline will continue to explore options for bag drop areas at other key locations

British Airways has teamed up with AirPortr to create new convenient fast bag drop areas before heading to the departures concourse at British Airways’ London flagship Terminal 5 at Heathrow airport.

With the first drop-off point planned at the Heathrow Express train platforms, customers will be able to quickly and securely drop-off their luggage at peak times**, before traveling bag-free straight through to security. AirPortr’s team seal, secure, and check in bags for customers’ flights, before being collected from the reclaim at their destination.

Customers can also choose to book luggage collections from their home address, from £19*. This service allows travelers to check in their bags from the comfort of their own doorstep, with a vetted delivery driver. AirPortr ensures that once collected, bags are sealed and monitored throughout the delivery process.

Passengers can track their luggage online from the moment it leaves their doorstep, or at the T5 key access areas, right up to the bag being loaded onto the aircraft. Customers using the services also receive digital bag tag receipts.

Tom Stevens, British Airways’ Director of Customer Experience said: “Ahead of July 19, we have been busy investigating and trialling ways to ensure that we can offer our customers the smoothest journey through the airport possible.

We believe this contactless initiative with AirPortr allows our customers to avoid baggage check-in queues and move through the airport without the hassle of carrying luggage, as well as offering the reassurance that we are doing everything we can to ensure the safe delivery of their bags from doorstep to destination.”

As well as the AirPortr’s luggage service, British Airways also offers a special twilight baggage drop service the night before travel from Heathrow Terminal 5, when customers are able to deliver their bags to the airport terminal between 4 and 9pm the day before they travel.

The airline is continuing to explore how it integrates other technologies to further streamline the customer experience, including trialling digital travel apps to ensure customers meet the entry requirements for their destination before arriving at the airport. Customers can currently use VeriFLY on all flights to the US, Canada and France as well as on all inbound flights. The airline has also recently announced its involvement in IATA’s Travel Pass. The digital travel solution will begin on British Airways’ flights from Heathrow to Geneva and Zurich.

British Airways’ customers traveling to Cyprus, Germany, Greece, Italy, Spain and Portugal, can now also upload their negative Covid-19 test result and other documentation directly into ba.com for verification before travel.

Elsewhere the airline is trialling new intelligent queuing technology from Qmatic, that enables customers to virtually queue at check-in by pre-booking their slot time in advance of arriving at the airport.

Porter Airlines introduces more options to pay for flights

TORONTO, July 21, 2021 /CNW/ – Porter Airlines is introducing more payment options for customers when purchasing flights on the company’s website.  

Porter is partnering with Ingenico to provide alternative secure and convenient payment methods, starting with PayPal and WeChat. New channels are also being considered for future introduction.

Additionally, customers who want to travel, but prefer to spread out their costs, can finance purchases of $300 or more by paying through easy monthly installments using Uplift. Customers will see the total cost of their trip at the time of booking, along with the monthly payment amount, so they can easily budget and experience the travel they deserve. There are no late fees or prepayment penalties, and customers can travel even before they are finished making their prepayments.

“Customers are adopting new ways of making purchases and we want to give them more choices when shopping with Porter,” said Kevin Jackson, executive vice president and chief commercial officer, Porter Airlines. “These options provide the budget flexibility and convenience many people are looking for.”

First Dassault Rafale Aircraft Has Been Officially Delivered To Greece

The first Rafale jet for the Hellenic Air Force has been delivered to Greece today.

The Hellenic Air Force (HAF) took delivery of the first Rafale, a two-seater B model, during a ceremony hosted by Dassault Aviation at the company Flight Test Center in Istres, France, and attended by Greece’s Minister of National Defense Nikolaos Panagiotopoulos, on Jul. 21, 2021.

The first delivery comes after Greece announced last year the acquisition of 18 Rafale F3-R, to replace the oldest Mirage 2000 currently in service in the Hellenic Air Force. Greece signed a 2.3 Billion Euro (2.8B USD) deal with France in January.

While some of the new jets will be newly built, the majority will be second-hand aircraft from the French Air Force. In fact, the first aircraft as well as the next five will come from the French Space and Air Force and will be used to train Greek pilots and ground personnel in France, before the aircraft move to Tanagra Air Base, Greece.

A first group of HAF pilots who have already been trained by the French Air Force in the last months, and 50 HAF technicians will soon join the Dassault Aviation Conversion Training Center (CTC) in Mérignac, France to continue their training.

“Following the Mirage F1 in 1974, the Mirage 2000 in 1985 and the Mirage 2000-5 in 2000, the Rafale is now proudly flying with the Hellenic Air Force colors. The Rafale is a Strategic Game Changer for the HAF. It will play an active role by securing Greece’s leadership as a major regional power. I would like to reaffirm our total commitment to the success of the Rafale in Greece,” said Eric Trappier, Chairman and CEO of Dassault Aviation in a public release.

By the end of the year, Greece will receive the first six second-hand aicraft; six new ones are planned to be delivered next year, while the last six (second-hand) Rafales are expected to be delivered in 2023.

The first aircraft delivered to the HAF should be in the F3-O4T standard, the one before the latest, the F3-R upgrade, that includes some major enhancements like the new Thales RBE2 Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar, the Spectra (Système de Protection et d’Évitement des Conduites de Tir du Rafale or, in English, Self-Protection Equipment Countering Threats to Rafale Aircraft) electronic warfare system, an Auto-GCAS (Automatic Ground Collision Avoidance System) and the new laser-guided variant if the Sagem AASM “Hammer” (Armement Air-Sol Modulaire “Highly Agile Modular Munition Extended Range”). The Rafale F3-R will also receive the MBDA Meteor missile and the Thales Talios targeting pod.

According to most sources, in the end the HAF will operate a mixed fleet of F3-O4T and F3-R aircraft.

Greece is also looking to acquire a squadron of 24 F-35A 5th generation aircraft possibly from 2024 or at the end of the deliveries of the Rafale and the upgrade of the F-16.
