Bots buying PS5s was to be expected as every gaming launch has scalpers and scammers. It’s one of the biggest problems with online purchases as fans clamored to pre-order or buy one on launch day. And it’s not just PlayStation, as Xbox users deal with the same nonsense.

Just head to eBay and you’ll find dozens of consoles for sale for obnoxious prices. But those aren’t bots. Bots are usually used by larger groups of individual or third-party websites, which will then resell the consoles on separate websites.

One of the most egregious sellers that we know of bought 3,500 consoles. The news was shared by Business Insider as a Discord group came forward bragging about their haul. These things are possible still as Sony and Microsoft have done a poor job of restricting the purchase of multiple consoles or weeding out the bots.

And until this issue is fixed, expect every major launch to follow the same pattern. If you have the patience, wait until the new year when more consoles will be made available.
