30 Plunkett Rd, Mosman goes to auction on Saturday.

The long-held Balmoral home of the late Dr Harold Bell, and his wife Dr Pamela Bell, both honoured in their respective fields of economics and fine arts, is proving popular ahead of Saturday’s auction.

The solid brick home at 30 Plunkett Rd is in one of Balmoral’s most sought-after streets, is on 851sq m of land and just footsteps to Balmoral Beach.

A private path from the back of the property leads to the Esplanade and as the land between the house and beach is Crown land, the view cannot be built out.

And it’s for sale for the first time since 1963 when the couple bought it – the year they wed.

Stefon Bertram, of Pello Lower North Shore, has had 300 inquiries and 160 inspections.

“Dr H.F. Bell of the AMP Society”, as he was widely known, was a renowned economist in Australia through the second half of the 20th century.

For more than 40 years Dr Bell was a commentator on economic and public affairs, he was a regular broadcaster on ABC radio, president of the NSW branch of the Economic Society and an honorary life trustee of the Committee for the Economic Development of Australia.

He worked with the committee inquiring into teacher education, domestic airfares, corporate crime and was appointed as arbitrator over the price of natural gas in South Australia.

Dr Bell was made an OBE in 1979 and later honoured with an AO in recognition of his expertise in many private and public boards, both business and charitable.

Dr Pamela Bell taught art history at COFA and the University of NSW and was employed by the vice chancellor to catalogue and curate the Sydney University Art Collection – a role she maintained until her retirement.

The home last traded in 1963, the year that the Bells were married.

What an outlook!

Later she became an art valuer for the federal government and completed her doctorate.

She was also awarded an Order of Australia medal.

Dr Bell, now 89, painted from her home studio and loved her garden.

Bertram said the five-bedroom house offered scope for a rebuild or redesign, had lovely views stretching from the Spit to Manly, especially from the covered entertaining deck, and was surrounded by well-loved, established gardens.

Bidding for the home is likely to start in the mid teens.

Bertram pointed to comparable sales including two doors up at 26 Plunkett Rd on 850sq m, which sold for $20m two years ago, and a renovation project on 999sq m of land in Mandolong Rd which sold in September for $11.3m.
