Atlas Air Worldwide orders four new Boeing 747 freighters

The world’s largest operator of the Boeing 747 freighter, Atlas Air Worldwide has placed an order with Boeing for four new Boeing 747-8 freighters. The purchase agreement is part of the company’s “strategic growth plan,” the global provider of outsourced aircraft added that these new aircraft would allow the organisation to meet the “strong customer demand in the airfreight market.”

The Boeing 747-800F has a 20% higher payload capacity and consumes 16% less fuel than the Boeing 747-400 The 747-8F engines also produce 30% less noise in comparison to its previous versions of the aircraft. The Chief Executive Officer and President of Atlas Air Worldwide, John W. Dietrich described the Boeing 747-8 freighter as “the best and most versatile widebody freighter in the market” and added that the company was excited to bolster its fleet with the purchase order of these four 747 freighters.

Atlas Air Worldwide are the parent company of Atlas Air, Southern Air Holdings and Titan Aviation Holdings. The company hopes to operate these new aircraft on behalf of its customers, but also added that there may be dry-leasing opportunities through its leasing subsidiary, Titan Aviation. The company is the world’s largest operator of Boeing 747 freighter aircraft and currently has 10 Boeing 747-8Fs, 34 747-400Fs, five-passenger 747-400 aircraft, and four Large Cargo Freighters, more commonly referred to as the ‘Dreamlifter’.

In a company statement seen by AeroNewsX, President and CEO of Atlas Air Worldwide, John W. Dietrich said, “This significant growth opportunity will enable us to capitalize on strong demand and deliver value for our existing and prospective customers. The efficiency and capability of the 747-8F further complements our longstanding focus on leading-edge technology.”

Atlas Air Worldwide’s purchase agreement with Boeing for four 747-8 freighters will also be the final set of new 747 aircraft to be produced at the aircraft manufacturer’s Everett production facility. Atlas Air Worldwide said it expects to take delivery of these 747-8 freighters in 2022 commencing in May with the final aircraft being delivered later in October.

In a statement, Stan Deal, President and Chief Executive Officer of Boeing Commercial Airplanes said, “The 747 will forever hold a special place in aviation history and we are honored by Atlas Air’s longstanding commitment to the airplane. Atlas Air began operations 28 years ago with a single 747 and it is fitting that they should receive the last 747 production airplanes, ensuring that the ‘Queen of the Skies’ plays a significant role in the global air cargo market for decades to come.”
