Asymmetric Co-op Game ‘Carly and the Reaperman’ Coming to Quest in April

Asymmetric co-op VR games—where each user plays a wholly different gameplay role—are a rare breed. Fortunately, the well regarded Carly and the Reaperman is set for a Quest release date on April 15th, making it available on every major VR headset.

Originally released back in 2018 for PC VR headsets, and eventually PSVR, Carly and the Reaperman is an asymmetric cooperative VR game where one player acts as an overseer which can manipulate the environment with their hands in order to help the other player traverse the environment as a smaller character with traditional platformer controls.

The structure is very similar to Moss (2018), except two players work together instead of one player controlling both roles. The trailer below (from the PSVR version) shows the core gameplay:

While prior versions of Carly and the Reaperman had one player in a headset and the other player on a flat screen, the Quest version will apparently have both players in the headset. It seems too that this means the game will be built around online co-op, whereas the original version was built for local co-op.

Carly and the Reaperman has been well received on prior platforms, though it didn’t garner too much popularity, perhaps in part because of the lack of online co-op. On Steam the game holds a ‘Very Positive’ 94% from 110 reviews and a 4.3 out of 5 from 31 reviews on Oculus PC.

The Quest version of Carly and the Reaperman is set for an April 15th release date, priced at $20. Cross-buy hasn’t been confirmed, but we’ve reached out to the developer for comment.

Though designed as a co-op experience, the game’s store page indicates that co-op is optional, so those without a headset-owning friend will still be able to enjoy the game if they please.

There’s no word yet if the game will support cross-play with other headsets, though we’d suspect not considering the game’s age, and that it would require that other versions of the game be updated to include integrated online support.

Puzzle Bobble VR: Vacation Odyssey from Survios and Taito brings the iconic bubble popping series to VR for the first time next month on May 20. It’ll release for both Oculus Quest and Quest 2.

Puzzle Bobble VR

This new entry in the long-running puzzle game series celebrates the 35th anniversary of the franchise with an all-new entry that takes place entirely from a first-person perspective. Puzzle Bobble VR will feature 100 levels for you to aim, match, and burst bubbles. We’ve seen other big puzzle games make the leap to VR with great results, like Angry Birds VR or Fruit Ninja VR, so we’ll keep our fingers crossed for similar success this time around.

Puzzle Bobble VR will feature a Story Mode with the 100 aforementioned levels that each contain 3-star ratings at the end, an Infinite Mode to try and get the highest score possible against never-ending waves, and an Online Duel Mode to pit your skills against an opponent in a 1v1 battle.

“We are excited to bring Puzzle Bobble to virtual reality through our partnership with Survios in Puzzle Bobble VR: Vacation Odyssey,” said Tetsu Yamada, President of TAITO Corp. “VR allows us to deliver a new approach to bubble-popping, allowing long-time fans and new players to experience Puzzle Bobble like never before and just in time for Bubble Bobble’s 35th anniversary.”

Puzzle Bobble VR: Vacation Odyssey is slated for release on Oculus Quest and Quest 2 next month on May 20. Wsihlist the game on the Quest Store now if you’d like. Find out more about the game over on the official website.

Let us know what you think of how the game looks so far down in the comments below!

Masterpiece Studio announces release of its complete Virtual Reality 3D creative suite ‘Masterpiece Studio Pro’

In Virtual Reality News

April 19, 2021 – Masterpiece Studio (formerly MasterpieceVR), has recently announced the release of Masterpiece Studio Pro, a complete virtual reality (VR) 3D creative suite that enables creative professionals without 3D modeling experience to create usable 3D content for animation, gaming, and more.

“VR has shown promise in revolutionizing 3D content creation by making it fast, easy, and enjoyable, but this was never fully realized because there were always missing gaps in the pipeline,” said Jonathan Gagne, CEO at Masterpiece Studio. “Masterpiece Studio Pro is an industry milestone that uses VR and machine learning to remove the missing gaps to create production-ready 3D assets.”

According to the company, these missing gaps include the fact that when creating 3D content using VR tools, artists and creators could not use this content in the real world without spending additional time cleaning it up in multiple desktop programs.

“One thing that Masterpiece Studio Pro has done for me as an independent artist and creative is opened up the potential to create things that I could not have ever made or had the resources or time to create,” commented Dylan Sisson, Digital Artist at Pixar Animation Studios. “Just by being able to take my 2D skillset, directly apply it in 3D, and then take those 3D assets to do something like 3D print is such a fluid and immediate process.”

Masterpiece Studio noted that following the innovation of rigging and skinning for VR with its Masterpiece Motion platform, Masterpiece Studio Pro now streamlines 3D for creatives by simplifying mesh optimization, Auto UV, retopology, and texture painting – all in one immersive suite.

“VR content creation is a whole new way of creating CG animation to keep up with audience demand and not sacrifice quality,” added Tom Box, Co-founder, Blue Zoo Animation. “Discovering tools like Masterpiece Studio Pro and seeing how they can be combined to create powerful new workflows has shown us that breaking free of the traditional 2D input and output devices … can vastly speed up the creative process both in the speed of team communication and speed of which ideas can be explored and developed.”

Masterpiece Studio Pro’s creative suite includes all the features and creation tools of the original, MasterpieceVR and Motion apps, with the addition of layers, retopology tools for making models production-ready, auto UV, and texture painting, as well as blend shapes for creating facial animations.

Furthermore, Masterpiece Studio Pro can export in formats that are compatible with most 3D programs, including 3DS Max, Maya, ZBrush, Substance Painter, Marmoset, Blender, Medium by Adobe, Tvori, and Gravity Sketch, with the company stating that more programs will be announced in the future.

Masterpiece Studio Pro is available for HTC, Oculus, Valve and Window Mix Reality headsets. For more information on Masterpiece Studio and its VR creation platforms, please visit the company’s website.

Co-op Shooter Zero Caliber: Reloaded Heads to Oculus Quest in May

Avatar

Published

Back in February XREAL Games revealed that its PC VR shooter Zero Caliber was being reworked for the Oculus Quest platform, arriving in the form of Zero Caliber: Reloaded this year. Today, the studio has dropped a new trailer alongside a launch date and price for the title.

While XREAL Games has rebuilt its original FPS for Oculus Quest the core fundamentals remain the same, there’s a story-driven, single-player campaign with realistic guns and scenarios. Plus, there’s a 4-player co-op mode if you want to bring some friends along to help with any of the levels. The studio has mentioned that the co-op will run on dedicated servers – NA, EU and SEA regions – with an invite friend feature making that process easier. “Players will be able to invite their friends after launching a Co-op session directly to said session (as long as their friends have the game running or they’re idling in the Oculus Quest Home),” the team notes in an email to VRFocus.

It’s all designed with realism in mind, from the weapon handling to the environment. So guns need to be manually reloaded and attachments added to improve their functionality. You can practice with each one in the gun range and when out in the field almost all the surfaces are climbable, enabling you to change strategies and flank enemies when required.

Zero Caliber: Reloaded will support both Oculus Quest and Quest 2, with the latter headset getting visual improvements. This will include PBR textures on the weapons and hand so Quest players will see nice and shiny reflective surfaces. Further enhancements are slated to arrive post-launch alongside new content and a game mode.

As for the original Zero Caliber for PC VR headsets that’s still in Early Access at the moment on Steam and Oculus Store. XREAL Games has been beta testing a PvP mode with expectations that it’ll drop later this year.

Zero Caliber: Reloaded will be hitting Oculus Quest on 13th May 2021 priced at $24.99 USD. As XREAL Games has stated previously, Zero Caliber: Reloaded will not support crossbuy with Oculus Rift’s Zero Caliber because the reworking has meant its an entirely different videogame underneath. Check out the new trailer below and for further updates keep reading VRFocus.
