Ecommerce giant Amazon is launching its first ‘micromobility’ hub in London. The launch consists of a fleet of e-cargo bikes and on-foot delivery staff. The hub will carry out around 5 million deliveries a year.

Active in low emission zones

Online marketplace Amazon is launching this hub in an effort to cut its carbon emissions. The company’s first hub is located in Hackney, east London. The electric bikes will operate in the city’s low emission zone postcode districts. However, the company already has plans to open more e-cargo delivery hubs around the UK.

“Amazon is driving towards a global net-zero carbon future. One way we’re doing that is through the transformation of our transportation networks”, said John Boumphrey, UK Country Manager of Amazon. “Our new e-cargo bikes, walkers and growing electric vehicle delivery fleet will help us make more zero emission customer deliveries than ever before across London and the UK in the coming months.”

Investments in sustainability

It is not the first time for Amazon to invest in sustainability across the UK. Earlier this year, the company announced that it would no longer pack products in single-use plastic delivery bags. It also revealed its first electric trucks this year.

‘Amazon is installing 30,000 solar panels in the UK.’

The ecommerce giant has now also announced that it will install over 30,000 solar panels on its buildings in Manchester, Coalville, Haydock Green, Wakefield, Bristol and Milton Keynes by the end of this year. Additionally, the company is launching 18 solar projects at several locations in the UK. The marketplace wants to double the number of projects in two years.
