New World beta testers and players are reporting Amazon Games’ new MMO is destroying their NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 graphics cards.

Amazon Games’ latest attempt to breaking into game is lit—and we don’t mean that metaphorically. It appears that New World, the newest MMO to hit the market, is nearly setting certain graphics cards on fire. According to several player reports, those running with the newest GPU on the market, the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090, are having their expensive chips turned into bricks by the sheer power of New World’s graphics.

There’s no real way to avoid having your card “bricked” by New World outside of Amazon Games’ own suggestions. Support team member Ironsmith_Albert outlined the recommendations in a forum post published on the morning of Wednesday, July 21. They are as follows:

  1. Disable the overrides in the driver settings
  2. Make sure to press “APPLY”
  3. Restart the game client

Players should also cap their frame rate by going into their NVIDIA Settings, going into the Visuals, and setting their Max FPS at 60.

“Additionally, please be sure to check in your NVIDIA Control Panel under Manage 3D Settings > Program Settings > Select New World, and check that Max Frame Rate either shows ‘Use Global Settings (Off) or just Off,” they wrote.

In an official statement posted later that same day, the studio reassured its player base that “the New World Closed Beta is safe to play.” It stated that the game had no such hardware failure issues arise in the months prior. Neither the previous beta nor the “many months of alpha testing” indicated GTX 3090’s would be in danger.

They’ve also released a patch within the following 24 hours to artificially cap the frame rate on their menu screen in order to keep everyone safe barring a larger solution.

Still, there’s no denying the number of fried GPUs players are coming forward with. EVGA—the distributor who appears to be most commonly associated with this issue—has offered to replace the ones they sold. They are already working with customers and sending out replacements at the time of writing.
