Abby Trott on bringing League of Legends’ Gwen to life

Avatar

League of Legends fans will recognize Abby Trott as the voice behind its new champion Gwen; the peppy skirmisher brandishing a giant pair of scissors as a weapon. Now that Trott is voicing Gwen, Daily Esports sat down with her (virtually) to learn a little of what the process is like.

Talking with Abby Trott on voicing League of Legends’ Gwen

“I love the layers of Gwen’s character. There’s an excitement and curiosity about her that’s almost childlike,” said Trott. “As someone who is newly alive and not knowing how long it will last, she has this sense of urgency. I think the writers did such an expert job of weaving all of these threads into her dialogue.”

Fans of other games and anime will recognize Trott as Nezuko in Demon Slayer, the immensely popular anime. They may also recognize her as the English singer of “Lifelight,” in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s theme song. Sharp-eared fans will even spot her as the voice behind Ribblepede, the adorably disgusting “rack o’ ribs” in Bugsnax.

Even while voicing such a wide range of characters, keeping her performances “grounded” is key to making a character relatable to Trott. “I think a good performance can make a character relatable. Believable,” she said. “In ‘the industry,’ the the phrase ‘grounded’ gets chucked around a lot. I aim to keep my performances grounded in truth; there’s always a piece of myself in there.”

Voicing Gwen is all about her personality

Players will definitely be able to hear Trott’s personality in Gwen’s lines. There’s excitement when she sees mountains for the first time in Summoner’s Rift. But there’s also anger, and even regret, when confronting other champions.

“Voicing video game characters can be tricky, since you don’t always get to see a script ahead of the recording session,” said Trott. “I’m a bit of a gamer myself and I want to make the player’s experience as immersive as it can be. With Gwen, I was mostly challenged by maintaining her unique Mid-Atlantic accent, combining elements of American and British English while remaining genuine. Luckily, I had the help of an excellent dialect coach, D’Arcy Smith, and an amazing team from Riot to guide me. It takes a true collaboration between the writers, directors, audio engineers and designers, actors, artists and more to bring a video game character to life. And I’m proud of where we landed with Gwen.”

Of all the lines that Trott recorded for Gwen, one of her favorites is when Gwen meets Viego, the resurrected king who accidentally created the Shadow Isles when trying to bring his deceased wife back to the land of the living. “Viego. She hasn’t forgotten you. And I haven’t forgiven you,” says Gwen. She isn’t dropping this grudge, even after a thousand years.

Trott’s other favorite quote? “Bad jokes are a waste of life.”

Abby Trott’s journey in voice acting

Trott’s experience in acting is a worldly one, starting in Japan and taking her across the globe to the United States. While working in Tokyo, Trott’s first professional opportunity came while doing voices for puppet characters in children’s musicals in Japan. There, Trott says, she fell in love with acting.

“My first opportunity to do voice acting professionally came when I was living and working in Tokyo. I have a background in acting and music, and I was performing in some children’s musicals around Japan,” Trott said. “The company I worked for needed voices for the puppet characters in the show. I auditioned and ended up booking some of those roles. I found that I absolutely loved it. The human voice can express so much. I had always been a fan of cartoons and video games growing up, but I never thought of voice acting as a profession that was accessible to me.”

She realized at that time that she wanted to pursue VO seriously, and that, in order to do so, she would have to leave Tokyo. This was because the opportunities that she was looking for, in recording animation and video games, were more rare in Japan than in the states. A few months later, Trott was in New York, working three jobs and taking voice 0ver classes in-between.

A contest with League of Legends alumni

It was around this time that Trott discovered an online voice acting contest hosted by Bang Zoom! Entertainment in LA. Trott had to make two videos, one for VO and one for Talent, by the very next day. After much hard work on her videos, she almost didn’t send them in because she was “terrified of what people would think.” However, Trott’s brother offered her a much-appreciated confidence boost, telling her to just go for it. With this support, she entered.

“Very surreally, I ended up winning,” said Trott. “Fun fact: the incredibly talented Patrick Seitz (Kog’Maw, Renekton, Lucian) and Keith Silverstein (Shen) were two of the judges. The studio flew four of us to Los Angeles for the finale, and I realized that this is where I needed to be. Six months after I moved to NYC, I moved out to LA… and I’m still here! Gettin’ all up in your video games.”

Gwen is set to release on April 15, and Trott hasn’t had a chance to play as her yet. However, according to her, that’s okay. “Honestly, I struggle to enjoy games when I have to listen to myself. It’s hard to get swept up in the fantasy when it’s ME. I still get sweaty palms when I hear the Smash Bros theme….”

When does the World of Warcraft Burning Crusade Classic pre-patch start?

Avatar

Published

on

World of Warcraft Burning Crusade Classic’s release date was announced today—and it’s just around the corner.

With a pre-patch introducing new races and classes, there will be a lot to do to prepare for the expansion’s launch on June 1.

The WoW TBC Classic pre-patch will officially begin on May 18. That will give players two weeks to take advantage of a new PvP honor system and leveling changes prior to the Dark Portal opening.

Unlike the original TBC pre-patch nearly 15 years ago, the TBC Classic pre-patch will give players an early introduction to Blood Elves for the Horde and Draenei for the Alliance.

Blood Elves can be paladins, something that was previously exclusive to Alliance races, and Draenei will be able to roll shaman, a previously Horde-only class.

Though leveling to 60 in just two weeks may seem like a tall task in WoW Classic, the changes coming in the pre-patch may help with the leveling experience.

Popular mage boosting will be nerfed slightly, but it will still be possible, as some high-level players have proven on the TBC Classic beta.

More importantly, the pre-patch will initiate a change to Patch 2.4.3 from 1.13.7. And unless Blizzard makes a change to the patch, that will include a nerf to the amount of experience required to level from one to 60.

Meanwhile, if you’re not looking to level a Blood Elf or Draenei but want to make a new character, Blizzard is introducing a new paid level boost available beginning May 18. For $39.99, players can boost any of the original Classic races to 58. This paid service can only be used once per account.

The best Corrupt cards in Hearthstone

Avatar

Published

on

Corrupt cards in Hearthstone allow you to upgrade those cards if they’re in your hand and you previously played a card with a higher mana cost. While some cards with Corrupt are quite weak and don’t feel that impactful, others are elevated to a whole new level through the keyword.

These type of cards were recently introduced to the game, but they’ve been making a name for themselves with Warlock being the most notorious class and benefiting from most of them. Cards such as Tickatus, Strongman, Cascading Disaster, and Luckysoul Hoarder have propelled the class to new heights.

Here are the best five Corrupt cards in Hearthstone.

Cascading Disaster

Image via Blizzard

Cascading Disaster is a pseudo board wipe if played during the late game. If you play two cards with a higher mana-cost than four while it is in your hand, you’ll upgrade it twice to destroy three random minions on board for only a four-mana cost. It’s one of the strongest removals in the game and while you won’t always have the option to wait it out, you can still use it early on to destroy one or two minions for only four mana.

Strongman

Image via Blizzard

Strongman is a Common seven-mana card with 6/6 stats, but its Corrupt effect reduces its cost to zero, allowing you to play it easily after wiping the board with Twisting Nether. It’s one of the most overlooked creatures right now and can benefit various decks.

Luckysoul Hoarder

Image via Blizzard

The three-mana cost Luckysoul Hoarder is decent by itself, since it has 3/4 stats for such a cheap cost, but it’s very strong due to its two effects. The first one is shuffling two soul Fragments into your deck, which will restore two health when drawn later on, and the second one is a card draw. For three mana, you get 3/4 in stats, four health restored later on, and a card draw. The value is enormous.

Ring Toss

Image via Blizzard

Ring Toss is a lackluster card if not Corrupted, allowing you to Discover one Secret and cast it. But when Corrupted, you get to Discover two cards, which makes it very strong. You can adjust based on board and get two powerful Secrets to counter your opponent’s next turn.

Tickatus

Image via Blizzard

Tickatus is a self-mill Legendary card with powerful 8/8 stats for only six mana. But if played in a Control deck and Corrupted, you mill your opponent instead. With Control Warlock dominating the meta, this card is very powerful if you intend to go for the late game. You’ll have a card advantage and fatigue less compared to your opponent.

Riot details upcoming changes to Tahm Kench, provides information on League account transfers

Avatar

Now that account transfers have been fixed, Riot has its eyes on unbenching the Kench.

In today’s “Ask Riot” developer post, Riot revealed that the long-awaited mini-rework to Tahm Kench is coming soon and detailed why League of Legends account transfers have been disabled for the better half of the last year.

Riot said the extensive changes to Tahm Kench, which have been hinted at for many months and recently seemed to appear in the teaser for the champion’s new Arcana skin, will finally be making their way to the PBE and live servers toward the end of the summer. These changes will include Tahm Kench’s current W and R abilities being swapped, with the power of each being optimized for their new positions in his kit.

“Tahm Kench’s current power is best utilized by highly-coordinated teams, which means he ends up much weaker for the rest of the player base,” said RiotPetrie, product lead for League. “To address this power discrepancy, we’re planning to move Devour to his ultimate (and buff it) and turn his W into a less-coordination reliant engage tool (think Abyssal Voyage, but shorter range and just for Tahm Kench… and with some added CC).”

The post also detailed why account transfers have been disabled for some time, resulting in players being unable to change their servers to other locations around the world until just recently. The system that Riot had in place for account transfers was incredibly unstable and had the potential of leaving out important account data upon the completion of the transfer, according to Riot Rapwnzel. This resulted in players having to submit numerous tickets to Player Support to facilitate the process, rather than having their accounts successfully transferred at the press of a button.

Account transfers have since been reactivated for the past few patches and Riot feels that the new system it’s implemented will prevent problems from occurring in the future.

“During this effort, we discovered some of these improvements could only be made by partnering with other teams at Riot, which took a bit more time,” Rapwnzel said. “We didn’t want to disrupt their schedule and projects with unexpected work.”

Nintendo Switch on Track to Break Sales Records

The Nintendo Switch has sold 84.59 million units in its 49 months on the market, according to new financial data Nintendo released Thursday. The console saw a 34.4% increase in sales between April 1, 2020 and March 21, 2021, up to $16.1 billion. Nintendo enjoyed an 85.7% net profit spike over that same period.

Niko Partners analyst Daniel Ahmad says current sales trends put the Switch on track to cross 100 million unit sales faster than both the Wii and the PlayStation 4 did.

Nintendo has also sold 587.12 million Switch games since the platform’s launch in 2017, with 36 games on its platform selling a million copies. Twenty-two of those games were Nintendo titles, indicating 14 were made by third-party developers. That’s more million-unit sellers, and a higher number of third-party million sellers, than ever before.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons took the top spot at 20.85 million copies sold, while Super Mario 3D All-Stars sold 9.01 million copies and Ring Fit Adventure sold 7.38 million.

Although the Switch will remain a strong seller, its boom may be on the way out. Nintendo lowered its financial forecast for 2021 to reflect predicted manufacturing troubles caused by the ongoing semiconductor shortage.

“The production of products might be affected by obstacles to the procurement of parts, including the increase in global demand for semiconductor components,” Nintendo said. “The consolidated earnings forecast is based on the premise that we will be able to secure the parts needed for the manufacture of products in line with our sales plans.”

COVID-19 may also disrupt Nintendo’s business for the next year.

“Regarding the risk associated with COVID-19, while the impact on business results for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2021 was limited, the supply of products might be affected if production and shipments are hindered,” the company said. “Other risk factors which are difficult to predict also continue to exist, involving areas such as development and marketing of products and services.”

Nintendo’s most anticipated titles — Breath of the Wild 2, Bayonetta 3 and Metroid Prime 4 — still have no release dates. The company gave no indication of how far along in development they were, but working from home has forced delays across the industry. It’s not hard to imagine Nintendo seeing similar struggles.
