75% private, government jobs for Kannadigas

Date:

Kannadigas will be given preference in 75 per cent of jobs in the private, government and autonomous institutions in Karnataka. Priority will be given to Kannadigas in skilled as well as semiskilled sectors with the implementation of the industrial policy, assured Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, during the Rajyotsava celebrations recently.

He also encouraged the use of Kannada language, which he referred to as a unifying factor, and said should be used in primary education as well as administration.

Elsewhere, in Tamil Nadu, the Madras High Court on November 1, struck down the law enacted by the Tamil Nadu government, which offered 10.5 per cent reservation in educational institutions and government jobs, to the Vanniyar community.

The Special Reservation Act, 2021, under which those belonging to the Vanniyar caste were given 10.5 per cent reservation in educational institutions and jobs was declared as being unconstitutional by the Madurai bench of the Madras High Court.

The Act, which was hurriedly passed in February 2021, by the previous government, set aside 10.5 per cent reservation for this community, which is considered to be Most Backward Class (MBC) category.

Tamil Nadu state provides 20 per cent reservation to MBCs and Denotified Communities (DNC). With the passing of the Act, the remaining groups in the category were left with just 9.5 per cent reservation.

In July, an order was passed approving the implementation of the 10.5 per cent reservation for the Vanniyar community.

However, following multiple petitions, the Madurai bench declared the Act unconstitutional and has questioned the manner in which the percentage was decided on, without gathering adequate data pertaining to the population, educational status and backwardness of the classes. The Act, according to the bench, was illegal and violated the Constitution of India.
