6 VALORANT teams that failed to qualify for Masters 2 Reykjavik but could turn heads in Berlin

Published

on

The VALORANT Champions Tour Stage Two Masters Two Reykjavik tournament gave fans their first taste of international competition. The best teams from each region competed for the title of the top VALORANT squad in the world, which Sentinels secured after an impressive undefeated run.

While each region sent a talented team to represent them in Iceland, there are still several squads that we think can compete on the international stage. Here are six teams we want to see in Masters Three Berlin that didn’t make it to Iceland.

Vision Strikers

Vision Strikers dominated the Korean region in VALORANT for the better part of a year and achieved a baffling 102-game win streak. The team won Korea First Strike, Masters One, and several other smaller events and tournaments during their unstoppable reign.

But they were eventually defeated by F4Q in the Korea Stage Two Challengers event and eliminated by NUTURN in the playoffs. These two losses ended Vision Strikers’ incredible undefeated run and prevented them from appearing in the first international LAN.

Vision Strikers has made significant changes to its roster in preparation for Masters Three Berlin, however. Kim “glow” Min-soo, the longtime captain of Vision Strikers, announced his retirement two weeks after the team failed to qualify for Masters Two Reykjavik. The team added BuZz and babo to replace glow and will move forward with a six-man roster.

Vision Strikers are still one of the best teams in the world and would’ve appeared in Iceland if there was another spot for Korea. Fortunately for them, Masters Three Berlin will have two Korean spots, so fans could get to see the incredible team go head to head with the best in the world at the event.

Envy

Envy are easily one of the best VALORANT teams in North America but have struggled to win a significant tournament despite consistently qualifying for these events. They made it into the First Strike semifinals but were eliminated by TSM, finishing in the top-four slot alongside Sentinels.

They also made it into the NA Masters One tournament and started strong with a win against Gen.G but were sent to the lower bracket by FaZe Clan and eventually eliminated by Gen.G. Envy’s story was similar in the VCT NA Challenges Two finals, where they made it to round three of the lower bracket before being eliminated by Version1.

Envy have consistently proven that they’re a top team in North America and have finished in at least the top four in the last three significant tournaments. They have an all-star roster of previous CS:GO players led by Pujan “FNS” Mehta and have had one of the most consistent rosters in NA VALORANT. If they can slightly adjust their performance, they could secure one of the three North American spots in Masters Three Berlin.

Cloud9 Blue

Cloud9 Blue struggled to perform in the early days of VALORANT despite having one of the best players in the world, Tyson “TenZ” Ngo, on its starting roster. TenZ eventually left the team to focus on content creation but returned to competitive play with Sentinels.

The team had trouble without TenZ in VCT Stage One but managed to qualify for the Challengers Finals in Stage Two. There, they swept Envy and NRG Esports in the upper bracket before facing TenZ and Sentinels. The series went to map three and included an impressive 13-1 Cloud9 win on Split, usually one of Sentinels’ best maps. But Sentinels eventually sent C9 to the lower bracket to face Version1 in the lower finals.

V1 beat C9, but they once again took the series to a third map and were just one win away from qualifying for Masters Two Reykjavik. C9 Blue have come a long way since the early days of VALORANT and they’re capable of breaking into the top echelon of North America. If C9 Blue can maintain the same performance they had in the Challengers Finals, they’ll continue to climb the ranks and be a contender for a spot in Berlin.

FunPlus Phoenix

FunPlus Phoenix didn’t qualify for Masters Two Reykjavik, but they’re still among the best VALORANT teams in Europe. They have a similar track record to Envy since both teams consistently qualify for significant events and tournaments but can never finish the job.

FPX finished in third place in the First Strike: Europe tournament after losing in the semifinals against SUMN FC. They went on to make it into EU Masters One but once again finished in the top-four spot after losing to Ascend.

FPX most recently lost against Team Liquid and Gambit Esports in the EMA Challengers Playoffs group play, which prevented them from making it to Iceland. Despite this setback, FPX are still ranked as the third-best team in Europe, according to VLR.gg, and are one of the best squads in the region.

The team is led by CS:GO veteran Kirill “ANGE1” Karasiow and has the potential to make it to Masters Three Berlin if they can slightly improve their performance in Stage Three.

Acend

Acend dominated in VCT Stage One and finished as the Masters One champions. But the team couldn’t replicate their performance in Stage Two and failed to qualify for the EMEA Challengers Playoffs.

This was a disappointing finish for a team considered to be one of the best in Europe, but there’s still hope for redemption. Acend recently parted ways with koldamenta, who was a vital part of the team’s early success. Aleksander “zeek” Zygmunt, a former player for G2, joined the team after koldamenta’s departure and is an excellent addition. Acend still has its core roster, which includes cNed, one of the world’s best Jett players.

Acend should be able to make their way back into the top of the European professional standings and could make it to Berlin.

Absolute JUPITER

Absolute JUPITER are another team that should’ve made it to Masters Two Reykjavik but were limited by the one slot allocated for Japan. The team is undoubtedly one of the best in Japan alongside Crazy Raccoon and they were the squad to beat before the VALORANT Champions Tour.

First Strike: Japan was a cakewalk for Absolute JUPITER, who won the event without dropping a map. They had a similarly successful run in Masters Two, where they made it to the grand finals with little trouble. Crazy Raccoon stopped the rampage with a 3-0 victory, however.

Once again, the team made it into the next significant event, the Japan VCT Stage Two Challengers Finals, and made it through the first two series without losing a map. But Crazy Raccoon continued to be the thorn in Absolute JUPITER’s side and sent them to the lower bracket.

Absolute JUPITER made it back into the grand finals but were eliminated by Crazy Raccoon for the second time in a major tournament. The good news is Masters Three Berlin has two spots allocated for Japan, which should be easy for Absolute JUPITER to secure. Crazy Raccoon failed to win a series at Masters Two Reykjavik, but Absolute JUPITER might be able to make it further than their regional rival in Berlin.

FlyQuest play ‘Protect the Kog’Maw’ composition to perfection against TSM in upset victory during 2021 LCS Summer Split

Published

on

After starting off the 2021 LCS Summer Split as the hottest League of Legends team in the league, TSM have cooled down significantly and fallen back to Earth for week two of the season. Their second loss in a row has come at the hands of FlyQuest, who broke out a classic “Protect the Kog’Maw” composition in today’s match.

Both of these teams came into this match from opposite circumstances, with TSM looking like one of the strongest teams in the LCS. Even though they lost to 100 Thieves, they had won their three previous matches. Meanwhile, FlyQuest were coming off of a debilitating loss against Cloud9, where they were dominated from start to finish. They failed to pick up a single kill in that match and were defeated in a short 22-minute bout.

This game, FlyQuest rocked with a heavy focus towards the mid and bottom lane while placing Licorice on weakside duty. They also put Johnsun on Kog’Maw duty, which gave them some late-game insurance alongside Lulu, who would protect him with multiple forms of crowd control and shielding. The 22-year-old AD carry ended with three kills, five assists, and no deaths.

It wasn’t the cleanest game from both sides, with the gold lead fluctuating across the entire match. But FlyQuest seemed to be a lot more coordinated when it came down to late-game teamfighting and macro, which ended up being the difference-maker in the final moments. TSM’s teamfighting looked sloppy in many engagements, and it cost them advantages that could have helped them get back into the game.

PowerOfEvil’s performances on Lucian haven’t instilled much hope into TSM fans either. The talented mid laner now has two losses in a row on the champion. He only has two kills through those two games, with three deaths and three assists. It looks like he simply isn’t able to have as much of an impact on the game compared to when he’s on control mages like Orianna and Syndra. In his match against Golden Guardians, for example, PowerOfEvil’s Orianna had four kills, 10 assists, and only one death.

It looks like TSM are trying to add some flexibility to their team compositions, but they will need to make some changes to their drafts if they’ll want to take home a win in their third match of the weekend against Counter Logic Gaming. At the same time, FlyQuest have shown a ton of resilience after their shellacking at the hands of C9 and aim to finish week two with a 2-1 record when they face off against GG tomorrow.

The LCS will continue tomorrow at 3pm CT.

The Anacrusis Beta: Will There Be an Open Beta?

Will The Anacrusis have a beta, alpha, or some other kind of pre-launch testing period open to the public? Considering its focus on multiplayer, some form of testing would seem to make sense, both so the developers can get player feedback and so players can try the game out before launch. Here’s what we know about the odds of Anacrusis getting a beta or alpha test.

Although developer Stray Bombay Company hasn’t announced any firm plans, it told Polygon it was unlikely to offer a beta test weekend, but that it was still considering whether or not it would use some kind of early access or release before the game hits 1.0.

“We’ll decide closer to launch what exactly is in the launch, and what we’re calling it,” said studio CEO and co-founder Chet Faliszek. A beta test weekend would be too short a cycle for Stray Bombay’s tastes.

“It’s more about living with it for a little bit, and so what we want to do is have that initial launch be an expression of what the game will be.”

For now, players will have to wait until Stray Bombay has firmer plans around release for The Anacrusis.

Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands Release Date: When is it?

Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands is a new “looter-shooter” game featuring Borderlands’ Tiny Tina as a dungeon master-like character in a land of fantasy.

The game was originally revealed to audiences at the Summer Game Fest on June 10. More information came out during Gearbox Software’s showcase at E3 2021 two days later, explaining the finer points of what players can expect from Wonderlands. Franchise fans will have the opportunity to roam a world inhabited by goblins, wyverns, unicorns (oh my!) for the first time. Even better—Wonderlands will feature the return of the legendary Butt Stallion!

Here’s when you’ll be able to roll for initiative.

Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands is slated for an early 2022 release. The exact date and time are currently unknown.

In Wonderlands, players are set to shoot and cast their way through a stand-alone adventure narrated by none other than Borderlands’ Tiny Tina. This spin-off features a unique medieval fantasy world—a first for the franchise—able to be picked up and played without any knowledge of the series. It is truly a departure from the rest with an entirely new cast of characters and a few Easter eggs for longtime fans.

From the limited information available at the time of writing, we can assume that Wonderlands will be a digital Dungeons and Dragons title with a twist. Classes, characters, and the full scope of enemies have yet to be revealed. However, with the game’s theming, players should be prepared to square up against all manner of mythical beasts.

Gearbox E3 2021 Recap: Everything Shown During Gearbox’s Presentation

Published

Gearbox framed its presentation as an ’80s-style informational video about “Gearbox University,” before running through its announcements, reveals, and so on. Here’s everything the company talked about during its presentation.

Randy Pitchford showed up on the set of the Borderlands movie to give a tour of the set. Ariana Greenblatt in costume as Tiny Tina was blurred out during the video, and director Eli Roth made an appearance. The movie will introduce Eli Atlas for the first time, and the actor who plays him in the film, Edgar Ramirez, also appeared in the on-set video.

Pitchford then introduced the producers Emmy Yu and Ari Arad, two producers with a history working in Marvel movies. The two producers said Pitchford really made them work to get the rights for the movie, but expressed excitement to be working.

Pitchford said shooting on the film was about halfway done.

Gearbox announced Homeworld 3 was now in production, though it showed little of the upcoming game, suggesting it was still in the early stages of development. The last mainline game in the series came out in 2003. It will be developed by Blackbird Interactive and published by Gearbox.

Senior producer Kayla Belmore appeared on stream to talk about the upcoming Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands. She said it was inspired by Assault on Dragon’s Keep, but it uses a new set of characters and world.

The dragon in the trailer is a wyvern enemy that will appear alongside goblins that Belmore says Gearbox has put its own spin on.

Gearbox is producing Tribes of Midgard, and the game is set for release July 27 on PS4, PS5, and Steam. Players take on the role of a legendary warrior tasked with protecting Ygrdasil, the world tree, from invading hellspawn and giants. Up to nine players can team up, and you’ll need the help — giants will attack the World Tree every few days, so you’ll need to be leveled up, equipped with your strongest crafted weapons, and hiding behind plenty of player-built fortifications.

Godfall is coming to PS4 on Aug. 10, and will come with a free upgrade to the PS5 version. It will include the free Lightbringer update and the Lightbringer endgame mode. The matchmaking beta will also be available, as will more than 40 new items and 50 skins.

The game’s first paid expansion, Fire and Darkness, will take players into the fire Realm for the first time. It will release the same day as Godfall on PlayStation.
