League of Legends Patch 11.12 starts on Wednesday, and although top lane can still thrive with minimal help now, there are some top laners that are worse than the rest of the pack.

Tanks are starting to come back into the meta for this patch. But, that doesn’t necessarily mean that bruisers and scrappier characters are trimmed out of the meta.

Many of the top laners that are a cut above the rest will make the more passive tanks feel very thin, unless they can provide a huge amount of utility in fights.

Traditionally an AD carry, Lucian has seen some slight success in solo lanes as of late due to professionals maximizing his kit when he is by himself. However, Lucian in the top lane when the tanks are starting to slowly come into meta cannot thrive anymore. Simply put, just don’t pick Lucian in the top lane.

Spinning to win has definitely had a better impact in previous times. Garen has fallen off in the top lane as an average top laner now with the meta shifting towards those who can deal damage for some distance. If Garen is kept at bay, other champions that can scale better and provide even more damage than just his “outplay button” Demacian Justice (R). He’ll have a rough time this patch adapting towards stronger top laners like Gwen or Lee Sin.

With nerfs on his base AD, from 59 to 57, Gnar will have an even harder time in trying to get ahead in the early game, which the Yordle relies on to prove effective for later in the game. Though fights with Gnar and well-executed skills can provide amazing utility, him face a large uphill battle as there are better top lane champions that can do nearly the same job.

Just when Renekton was beginning to thrive, he was nerfed soon after. His Cull the Meek (Q) ability will be nerfed on its healing from 3-7 to 2-6, and even lower base AD scaling from 4% to 3% upon hitting any unit that’s not a champion. There’s a lot less for Renekton to thrive on when he relies on the heal to slip out of fights and somehow remain on top, even if it wasn’t a good one.

Gragas cannot seem to get any love in this patch as well. Though there are not any immediate changes to his kit this Wednesday, he falls flat in comparison to the much stronger picks. Until there are some changes to his abilities or to his core items as a top laner, it’s likely he will be the most ineffective top laner for another few weeks – even if tanks are starting to come back into the meta.
