2022 MLB Power Rankings: July 4

Date:

Every week MLB teams will be ranked for the rest of the season. Here are the 2022 MLB power rankings July 4.

1. New York Yankees

Record: 58-22

Previous Ranking: 1

This should continue to come as a surprise to nobody. The Yankees remain as the top team in the league. Aaron Judge has put himself at the top of the AL MVP race. He was the top vote-getter in the American League All-Star voting, which gave him an automatic starting spot in the All-Star Game.

2. Houston Astros

Record: 51-27

Previous Ranking: 4

The Astros were spectacular over the last week. They won a series against the Los Angeles Angels, took a 2-game sweep of the New York Mets, and even defeated the Yankees in a makeup game on June 30th. Justin Verlander has been one of MLBs best pitchers.

3. Los Angeles Dodgers

Record: 49-29

Previous Ranking: 2

Tony Gonsolin finally has thrown enough innings to qualify for the league lead in ERA. He stands way ahead of the competition, with a 1.54 ERA and 10 wins on the season. They remain as one of the leagues best teams.

4. New York Mets

Record: 49-30

Previous Ranking: 3

Max Scherzer has finished his rehab stint through a few minor league starts. This sets him to return to the Mets rotation very soon. This is going to be a great addition for a team already at the top of the league.

5. San Diego Padres

Record: 47-34

Previous Ranking: 5

The Padres have one of the best pitching rotations in the entire MLB, led by Joe Musgrove, Yu Darvish, and Mackenzie Gore. Their lineup is led by Manny Machado, who owns a 4.0 WAR so far in 2022.

6. Atlanta Braves

Record: 46-34

Previous Ranking: 7

The Braves currently lead the National League in doubles and home runs. Their lineup remains elite. Rookie starting pitcher, Spencer Strider has been magnificent this year, including an 11-strikeout performance against the Reds this week.

7. Toronto Blue Jays

Record: 44-36

Previous Ranking: 6

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. has found his stride as of late. He has tallied nearly 20 home runs this year. 23-year-old catcher, Alejandro Kirk looks to add his first career All-Star appearance this year. He is in the voting for the American Leagues starting catcher.

8. Milwaukee Brewers

Record: 46-35

Previous Ranking: 10

The Brewers’ pitching rotation was the deepest in the league last year. This season, a few of those starting pitchers, Freddy Peralta, Brandon Woodruff, and Adrian Houser are all having down seasons. Corbin Burnes has been magnificent, as many expected.

9. Boston Red Sox

Record: 44-35

Previous Ranking: 8

The duo of Xander Bogaerts and Rafael Devers is one of the best SS/3B duos in the MLB. Both hitters are hitting over .320 with an OBP over .380. They will continue to hunt a wild card spot, as they are 14 games back in the AL East.

10. St. Louis Cardinals

Record: 44-37

Previous Ranking: 9

There probably isn’t a hitter on the planet that is hotter than the Cardinals first baseman, Paul Goldschmidt. He has put together one of the more impressive seasons in recent memory. He sits as the favorite for the NL MVP award.

11. Minnesota Twins

Record: 45-37

Previous Ranking: 14

The Twins are one of the best offenses in the league. They currently rank top 3 in the MLB in Barrel%, exit velocity, and xSLG. They also hold a top 7 batting average, sitting at a .253.

12. San Francisco Giants

Record: 40-37

Previous Ranking: 13

Joc Pederson has been one of the NL’s best advanced stat hitters this year. He is currently in the top 10% in Barrel%, HardHit%, exit velocity, xSLG, and WOBA. He leads the Giants in all these categories.

13. Tampa Bay Rays

Record: 43-36

Previous Ranking: 12

The Rays are currently ranked second-worst in their division, ahead of just the Orioles. But, they are also in control of the 3rd Wild Card spot in the AL. The AL East has 4 teams in the current playoff as of today.

14. Philadelphia Phillies

Record: 42-38

Previous Ranking: 15

The trio of Bryce Harper, Rhys Hoskins, and Nick Castellanos will create issues for opposing pitching when Harper is able to return from the IL. Harper recently suffered an injury that will likely sideline him for over a month, if not longer. This will throw a wrench in the “Bryce Harper for MVP” crowd.

15. Cleveland Guardians

Record: 40-36

Previous Ranking: 11

The Guardians faced a tough matchup with the first-place Yankees. Triston Mckenzie was tremendous in his start against the Yankees, allowing just 1 hit in 7 shutout innings.

16. Los Angeles Angels

Record: 37-44

Previous Ranking: 17

Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani remain as the only bright spots on the entire Angels team. There might not be a hotter player than Ohtani right now, as he is getting the job done at an elite level at the plate and on the mound.

17. Texas Rangers

Record: 37-40

Previous Ranking: 19

The Rangers remain quite a ways away from a playoff spot, despite being second in the AL West. The AL West is 100% the Astros division, as they are the only team above .500, and above the 16th ranked team on this list.

18. Chicago White Sox

Record: 38-39

Previous Ranking: 16

The White Sox have been disappointing this year, as most MLB fans know. But even so, they remain directly in the middle of the AL Central divisional race. They are just 5.5 games behind the Twins.

19. Miami Marlins

Record: 37-40

Previous Ranking: 18

The Marlins have the 4th best Whiff% for a pitching staff in the entire league. They have done so by being the team that has thrown the second least fastballs in the entire MLB. They have one of the better pitching staffs, led by Pablo Lopez and Sandy Alcantara.

20. Seattle Mariners

Record: 39-42

Previous Ranking: 20

The Mariners have the 6th worst average exit velocity in the entire MLB, averaging just 87.8 MPH. Rookie Julio Rodriguez is one of the better hitters on the team, with an average 91.8 MPH exit velocity.

21. Baltimore Orioles

Record: 36-44

Previous Ranking: 21

The Orioles have struck out 714 times this year, good for third-most in the entire MLB. This is supported by their 31.5% chase rate, also 3rd in the MLB. This “big swing” approach has allowed them to slug 141 doubles.

22. Arizona Diamondbacks

Record: 35-44

Previous Ranking: 22

The Diamondbacks are top 10 in the league in team home runs, with 93 so far. Christian Walker has hit 21 of those 93 home runs.

23. Colorado Rockies

Record: 35-44

Previous Ranking: 23

CJ Cron currently holds the triple crown for the Rockies, leading them in AVG, home runs, and RBIs. The Rockies also have an above .500 record at home.

24. Chicago Cubs

Record: 32-47

Previous Ranking: 26

Patrick Wisdom has slugged 16 home runs in 266 at-bats but has struck out 104 times as well. They have put together a pretty respectable offense so far this year.

25. Pittsburgh Pirates

Record: 32-47

Previous Ranking: 24

Oneil Cruz has been a unicorn for the Pirates. He has received tremendous media attention for his freakish athletic ability. He has shown some good power numbers in his first 50 at-bats of the year. Cruz will need to reach base better to stick in the Pirates’ future lineups.

26. Kansas City Royals

Record: 29-48

Previous Ranking: 27

Bobby Witt Jr. continues to show flashes of the potential that has made him such a highly touted prospect. He will need to find a way to raise the OBP and OPS to reach his full potential.

27. Detroit Tigers

Record: 30-47

Previous Ranking: 25

There are no spectacular hitters in the Tigers lineup. The best qualified OPS is .704, by Miguel Cabrera. The pitching staff is also struggling, with Tarik Skubal being the only sub-4.00 ERA pitcher in the starting rotation.

28. Washington Nationals

Record: 29-52

Previous Ranking: 29

Josh Bell had a spectacular month of June. He raised his team leading batting average to .317. He is the only National with an OPS above .850. Juan Soto has an atrocious batting average, sitting at .226, but holds an above average OBP, sitting at .378.

29. Cincinnati Reds

Record: 27-51

Previous Ranking: 28

The Reds have been sliding as of late. They are nearing a -100 run differential, which would join the Athletics, Pirates, Nationals, and Royals as the only teams below -100. Tyler Stephenson is expected to start a rehab stint soon, drawing all eyes onto his return to the big league club.

30. Oakland Athletics

Record: 26-55

Previous Ranking: 30

The Athletics remain in the 30th spot on this list. They have a league worst -115 run differential. They also have an atrocious 8-28 record at home, also worst in the league.
