$15-Million Tudor Estate In A Wealthy Boston Enclave Has A Story To Tell

Date:

Dig into the property records of a sprawling older house in a wealthy Boston suburb and one will occasionally come up with the name of a notable former owner.

Although this brick Tudor in Wellesley, Massachusetts, dates to the late 1930s, its brush with fame takes place two decades later when sportscaster Curt Gowdy purchased it.

During his 33 years of ownership, the former Army Air Force fighter pilot worked as the Red Sox play-by-play announcer and then at NBC Sports. He won a career 13 Emmy Awards and broadcast numerous World Series, Super Bowls, Rose Bowls and NCAA Final Fours as well as Olympics.

The so-called “voice of the Red Sox” would later be inducted into the Red Sox Hall of Fame – one of 23 Hall of Fame honors he received.

Gowdy and his wife Jerre raised their three children in the home. They sold in 1991 for $1.317 million.

Now it’s time for the next chapter in the grand home’s history.

Set on nearly two acres and surrounded by mature trees and shrubbery, the secluded house is reached by way of a sweeping driveway. Half-timbering adorns the facade, some of which is covered by basketweave-patterned brickwork. The slate gabled roof is punctuated by hipped dormer windows.

A herringbone-patterned brick walkway leads up to the front door. A wide veranda steps down to the lawn at the back of the house.

Traditional craftsmanship is evident through the 9,250 square feet of living space. The central staircase stops at a landing with a window seat. The living room features a central fireplace – one of four in the home – flanked by arch-topped window alcoves. Other details include wood floors, crown molding and French doors.

There are seven bedrooms and eight bathrooms, as well as a basement and a walk-up attic.

A two-car garage and a three-car garage are attached to the house. Motor court parking can accommodate another 10 vehicles.
